S10e Waking up from Standby

2009-01-26, 15:04 PM

The S10e does not reliably wake up from stand-by when running on battery power. The S10e will wake-up if left in standby for a short time, say 10 minutes, but if left for a longer time it seems to enter a 'dead state' when it cannot be woken up. When in this 'dead state' both the power and the wi-fi lights are illuminated and it is necessary to force a reboot of the S10e by keeping the power button depressed for 5 seconds or so. This results in any work in process when the machine entered stand-by being lost. It does not seem to matter whether stand-by is a result of closing the lid or a period of inactivity.

I did not experience this until after I applied the BIOS update offered automatically by the Lenovo System Update software.

If the S10e goes into standby when connected to the 240v supply it will 'wake-up' normally.  I have tried reducing the hibernation timer from 2 hrs to 45 minutes in case problem was caused by loss of battery power when in standby but it makes no difference.  The operating system is Windows XP/Home.

Does anyone have a fix for this?

Thanks

Ian

This is most likely due to the settings in the Lenovo Energy Scheme. I have a post on this and also another one on Hibernation in my Blog. You can adjust when you want your s10e to sleep or hibernate as desired through the Energy Schemes. Please feedback if this solves your problem.

Thank you for the link to your blog and the info.

I have tried altering the settings and I am still having the same issue.  Could let me have details of the settings which work for you  on battery power please?

Many thanks for your help.

Suggest you disable Hibernation altogether and test if your problem go away. You can do this by accessing the Advanced tab in the Lenovo Energy Management dialog box by unchecking the "Enable Hibernation" box. Don't forget to click the Apply button for it to take effect.

Yes, by turning off hibernation the standby condition does not 'hang' the PC, it eventually powers down - but what I really want to do is to eventually enter hibernation from stand-by after a period of time so that I can continue what I was doing.

This seems to be a firmware issue so I hope the Lenovo engineers will soon fix it!

Oh dear!  I thought there was a work around to this by disabling hibernation.  Unfortunately the work around does not work.  Last night I left the netbook plugged into mains power and forgot about it.  This morning it did not respond and had to be re-booted by depressing the power on button for 5 seconds or so.  It may be relevant but it was in the 'performance' power management state.  Normally the netbook would have been operating in the 'balanced' power management mode.

Does anyone else experience this problem?

You can remove the Lenovo Energy Management programme by clicking your Start menu and select Control Panel > Add or Remove Programme and select Energy Management and then Remove.

do you still have the hibernation problem?

when running on batteries only, i usually only use the Balance and low power schemes, mostly low power - the i often don't have to bring the power supply to school.

but i dont have the problem. i changed it so that when i closer the lid it does nothing - it acts as if it was open - so standby after 10 minutes.

i think the place you have to change is the Turn Off Harddisc.

another idea is that you next time give it some time - i usually only have to press the power button shortly, and it won't re-boot, and no work is lost. otherwise i just have to touch the touchpad and wait 2-3 seconds before it comes to life

hopes it helped

Thanks for the suggestions.  I am afraid I have just given up and changed the "lid closed" action to "hibernate".  This does stop me losing work but is not the way I ideally want to work!  Awaiting new firmware release to see if that will cure the fault.
