U410 with no bluetooth

Hi, so it seems that while one can not spec a U410 online without bluetooth (or there is no option to include one, and it seems to say it is included), it is possible to buy one without bluetooth installed.

I just bought mine from Best Buy in Vancouver Canada, was told it did have bluetooth, and found out after trying to get a bluetooth mouse to work that while it has bluetooth drivers preinstalled, that it does not have a physical card. I just called the Lenovo tech support (case number 8000161784, spoke to Dave @ lenovo hardware tech) and he said that mine apparently didn't have bluetooth installed and to bring it back to Best Buy.

The thing is though, that looking at the specific code of the laptops that Bestbuy has 4376, which is also the same as on the microsoft store, and several other retailers, that this specific product line doesn't have bluetooth.

My first question is why they would even bother to make confusion in the marketplace by advertising generally that the laptop has bluetooth, and making some specific models without it.

My second question is what to do about it? I've seen the tech videos posted online which show how to open up the case and remove/install the wifi card. I assume it is a standard mini-pci card, but I'm concerned that the bios whitelist would prevent me from using a new card.

What card are the laptops which DO have bluetooth using? I presume if I installed that  card it would pass the whitelist test without hassle. (I am also assuming here that the laptops with bluetooth have a combo wifi/bluetooth card, as there is only a single minipci slot apparent on the videos)

Is this something I could send to Lenovo service to get installed? (I'm not afraid of DIY, but if affordable/available the 'legit' option is preferable).

Thanks for any answers you can provide.

Re: U410 with no bluetooth

Hi IRobertson, welcome to the forums,

it would be interesting to know where you have seen the U410 being advertised as having bluetooth as standard.  On an admittedly quick look around the canadian site I kept getting errors when looking for the U series 14" models. I also looked in the IdeaPad Notebooks psref which can be found here it shows the 4376 models listed as not having bluetooth. On the USA website it shows that bluetooth is available on selected models here.

As far as adding it the answer is a probable yes, but needs a little more research.

Re: U410 with no bluetooth

Hi, Andy

It seems there is a general confusion as to whether the u410 has bluetooth (at least confusion on the retail end).
Has Bluetooth:

http://www.excaliberpc.com/618206/lenovo-ideapad-u410-43762cu-14.html
http://shop.lenovo.com/gbweb/gb/en/laptops/ideapad/u-series/u410

No Bluetooth:
http://www.futureshop.ca/en-CA/product/lenovo-lenovo-ideapad-14-3rd-gen-intel-core-i5-3317u-ultraboo...
http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msstore/en_US/pd/Lenovo-IdeaPad-U4104376/productID.250640400

No Info:
Lenovo Canada
http://www.ncix.ca/products/?sku=73013#ProductDetails
http://shop.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary/controller/e/web/LenovoPortal/en_US/catalog.workflow:category.det...

Basically, lenovo's site seems to indicate that it either HAS bluetooth, or it gives no information one way or the other. Since it indicates in the literature that 'some models' have bluetooth and some don't, but then doesn't give information later, it leads one into confusion.

The Intel Centrino Wireless-N 2200BGN wifi card seems to come in 2 versions, one with bluetooth, and one without. In Asia it seems that the u410 is spec'd with other cards, but the north american ones are spec'd with the intel card. Maybe the intension is in the future to add the bluetooth capability with the combo card, but at the moment, they do not. (which leads one to wonder why, since the combo card can't cost anything different than the non combo card ... at least the retail cost is very similar).

The 'tech specs' on the american site are currently listed as 'coming soon' which makes it hard to answer the question before purchase.

The list of currently available models posted here http://www.lenovo.com/psref/ does not even list my version (grey ultrabook with 500gb drive) as available, so can't even use that as a guide http://www.lenovo.com/psref/pdf/ipbook.pdf

I would love to know whether the combo card passes the whitelist, since it would be the same intel card, just the combo version of it. $25 to solve this issue seems fine to me http://www.frontierpc.com/wireless-networking/wifi-wireless-nics-adapters/wi-fi-bluetooth-combo-adap...

I would love to know which card the UK U410 has that does have bluetooth, it is listed only as Lenovo BGN Wireless.

If anyone knows whether the combo intel wifi/bluetooth card will pass the whitelist test I would love to hear it!
thanks

Re: U410 with no bluetooth

Hi Ian,

We need to be very carefull here making comparisons accross different countries or continents; it is a fact that products will differ in configuration in different areas.  A UK site may well show that bluetooth is standard, which may be correct for the UK market, but it would be wrong to infer that it's relevant to the North American or Asian markets.

Which model number does your U410 actually have, 4376*** and where did you purchase it, UK / USA / Canada?  There have been occasions when a retailer or Lenovo have published errors in their product description so we need to look at your specific system and where you purchased it.

I wouldn't risk just buying a card which isn't from Lenovo, the risk of it being blocked by a whitelist is too great.  I've checked the parts list for the U410 and U310 but unfortunately they only include systems from last year and haven't yet been updated. Maybe they'll be updated when the consumer support site moves on the 23rd? Dunno?

Re: U410 with no bluetooth

Hi, I'm currently looking to find a u410 with Bluetooth (in the US).  According to Lenovo chat reps, BT is not available on the model. Then I find a US retailer with it:

http://www.jr.com/lenovo/pe/LEN_43762BU/

But I have serious doubts about that unit having it.  Any definitive word on this?

Thanks!

Re: U410 with no bluetooth

Hi Paul, welcome to the forum,

according to the IdeaPad Notebooks psref book, (p. 41 of the pdf), the 4376-2BU does not have Bluetooth which suggests to me that your doubts are justified.
