U430 Touch hard drive stuttering

2014-03-03, 17:29 PM

I recently purchased a Lenovo U430 Touch and it came with ST500LX005-1CW162 hybrid drive (500GB HDD+16GB SSD). Drive worked fine and was actually pretty zippy until I transfered about 100 GB of photos and music on the drive. Drive started to stutter ever since and no matter what I tried (disable file indexing, defragmentation, install latest Intel rapid storage technology drive) did not help. Computer randomly freezed for 10-30 sec and I have no idea what else to try. Any advice is highly appreciated.

Stuttering stopped after upgrading from 4GB RAM to 8 GB RAM.

Try typing and running at command prompt with administrator rights "sfc /scannow". Do not include the quotation mark.

Ok. Thanks. That means the system files are ok. It could be the 16 GB msata ssd. However, I'm not familiar with it. Sorry.

There is no mSATA drive, the drive is hybrid meaning it has a built in 16GB SSD in the same case with the HDD.

I know that you have the sshd. I tried looking at the specs in Seagate's site and it states that it has the 8 gb ssd only no 16 gb. Referring to the specs of the computer it says 16 gb or 32 gb msata ssd aside from the 5oo gb sshd.

I have a 1 TB sshd installed also and it has the 8 gb ssd. This is the max so far that I can find. Try downloading Seagate's diagnostic program to check the hdd.

I have the first U430 BestBuy model 59371574 that comes with 4GB RAM and 500GB+16GB flash hybrid drive. The newer U430 model 59407547 comes with 8GB RAM and 500GB+8GB flash hybrid drive. Both models have an empty mSATA on board connector but no mSATA drive is installed from the factory. Seagate seems to manufacture these drives exclusively for Lenovo and they don't offer any customer support, directing all inquiries to Lenovo. Here's Lenovo's part number and description for ST500LX005-1CW162

The drive passes basic SeaTools tests such as SMART, short drive self test, short generic test but it stutters just like the first generations of SSD drives. Since the 16GB flash is not a separate drive but rather used as a cache drive, the firmware of the drive is controlling the cache process and it probably has a bug that's causing it to stutter.

Yes the commercial sshd so far have the 8 gb max size only. I saw in Ebay one seller selling the ST500LX005 model for around $65.

I have not experience the same problem as you have with my model. Well we can only hope that Seagate will release a firmware update to correct the stuttering.

As a reference I'm attaching a benchmark of my model to compare with yours to see the effect of the stuttering on performance.
