U510 Replace mSATA

2013-05-24, 16:04 PM

I have an IdeaPAD U510 with 32GB mSATA drive and 1 TB HDD, running Win7. Can I replace the mSATA with a 256 GB mSATA SSD, and run C: boot/Windows/Program Files on that?  Any particular brand mSATA recommended?

Thx, Gus

Hi Gusz

Welcome in lenovo community

Unfortunately the maximum SSD that can be installed on your machine model is SSD 32 GB

Thanks

Alaa

Hi Alaa,

Could you, please, give more details about this limitation? Is it mentioned somewhere in machine specifications?

Thx, Anthony

Thanks, Solid_Cruver

but I was asking about SSD limitation for mSATA interface (not RAM limitations). Is u510 really can handle a maximum of 32 GB on mSATA? I wish I could install 120GB drive there.

Thanks in advanse,

Anthony

Just to add what has been discussed, I have read in the personal system reference book the following "24GB or 32GB mSATA Solid State Drive (SSD)*, via PCIe Mini Card slot. * For the sole purpose of supporting Intel Smart Response Technology". Of course, it does not state whether it is minimum or maximum, but it does state for the purpose of IRST and no other else. Maybe you can install that 120 GB provided the bios will support it but you only have to allocate 32 GB for IRST and the rest for whatever you want it.

I've oftened questioned the 32GB mSata limit Lenovo stated, Being in IT I didn't buy it for a second so I just bought a Samsung EVO 840 250GB mSata SSD.

I popped it into the u510, with a clean install of Window 8.1pro 64bit and guess what???

I now have a real SSD boot drive!!!  The 1TB Samsung sata drive is now pure storage and the SSD serves as a boot drive.

mSata is mSata there is no real size limit and it recognizes the EVO immediately.

My boot times are now 7-8 Seconds from Cold Start, the Laptop shuts down in 4 seconds & runs 10000000x's better than it did with the horrible hybrid implimentation from the factory.  Oh did I mention i now get 4.5-6 hours of battery life on the 3 cell battery as well :robotlol:

So for anyone wondering the U410 & U510 can accept real mSata Drives & they make a huge difference.

Thanks for the update, very valuable information. Did you have to do anything special to the U510 to install windows?

Somebody else that have installed a M-sata SSD, bigger that 32Gb, on the leno U510? I would try a 128gb one, but I don't want to buy it for nothing.

Thanks!
