U510 really using Hybrid Drive?

2013-02-17, 17:36 PM

Hi there,

Still haven't seen my post hit about why the U510 uses the SATA disk for booting and OS files.  I've dug into the Hybrid+SSD on the U510 but it doesn't appear to be a true hybrid drive that migrates higher value data to the SSD from the slower SATA disk over tim.  The reason for thinking this is Windows 8 sees two discrete drives while true hybrids are supposed to appear as one drive.  Anyway, I'm looking for a reason to not redo my U510 or return it for the G780 that has a larger screen and much faster processor.

Thanks,

-chris

Hi mate
Welcome to the forums
Before proceeding further, could you please post a snip of your disk management?
By the way, u510 is an ultrabook. The sole purpose of msata in an ultrabook is caching(Intel rapid start and smart response technology) and that is set up in everyy ultrabook.

This is Win 8 issue from what I have read. Lenovo has not made RapidDrive tech compatible with Win 8...yet. It should work in Win 7 though.

Thanks for weighing in.  Here's a snapshot of the disk management on the system.  I'm pretty comfortable with hybrid storage containers as my company sells mixed SSD and spinning disk solutions.  It would be nice to see a counter in Windows or some other utility that shows the SSD really being used as a cache.

Hi
It seems the ssd is being used as caching. To confirm, check in bios if intel smart response/intel rapid storagebhas been enabled.

All my BIOS shows is "Rapid Start Technology".  Which I read is just simply waking up from sleep quickly, nothing to do with SSD.  Rapid Store is installed on the machine, but I cannot open or configure.  There is no data what so ever on the 24GB drive.  Mine is the same as the OP, 2 seperate drives.  I have no idea what's going on here or how to verify or fix.

Suggestions please?

Try the suggestion in this link to test the cache (Disk 0 in the picture).
