Upgrading the Wifi Mini PCI Express card

2009-12-26, 22:05 PM

I just got a U330 Ideapad and found it comes with a Broadcom wifi 802.11b/g card. I am thinking of exchanging it with a card that supports 802.11n, as well as having easier to work with Linux drivers (Broadcom has closed rivers that are a pain in the neck to activate: either you use ndiswrapper, or you recompile the kernel, or you have to write and muddle through a startup script -- no big deal, but why bother if there's a better alternative on two fronts?) . I found an old post where it said that, in the old times, many IBM Thinkpads would not boot with just any wifi card, as the BIOS would check the card against an internal list and refuse to boot if the card was not there. Aside from commenting on the practice, I hope that this is not the case with my new Ideapad. However, if it was the case, I would certainly appreciate learning which 802.11n card would be acceptable to the BIOS!

Thanks for any insight
