Re: Fan Control for the S10(e) - user-developed solution

2009-05-20, 19:27 PM

Hello, Slash!

I don't know what was it before, but now I am happy because I have to take my words back! It is about more then 2 hours of using your program and there is no battery issue!!! I didn't use any specifiс software and I have all lenovo's updates. But ok, I don't even want to find out the reason ;) Everything is working, so it's great! You are genius! But I hope you won't stop and we'll see the Win GUI soon ;)

To everybody:

Concerning  this DOS-window inconvenience. I've downloaded two small utilities: Alltotray and PS Tray Factory and they helped me to hide this window. So now I don't even see it in tray, but S10Fan.exe is working :)

The problem is: This battery issue is caused by any kind of conflict between two or more applications while they are both communicating over the EC ports at the very same time. It can be alright for hours, days, weeks, ... battery gone!

As long as we don't know which applications are affected (I don't know it, too - I've disabled nearly all running tasks while testing S10FanControl and still had issues), the issue can come back. Perhaps it will, perhaps it will not.

The other question is: NHC does not cause any issues. Why?

By the way, I'm trying to make a little app for setting up NHC correctly without user input. Reading model number and BIOS version and then write working files to the NHC directory. The setup process is the most annoying thing about NHC...

Greetings

Carsten

Carsten,

Have you looked at the EC controller data sheets for the S10? I took a look at your S10FanControl source code; the EC r/w command sequence does not match specification.

Hi.

A little correction: it's not my S10FanControl, it is written by user dresslerc, our first names are the same.

But he stated he has not enough time to search for the error and published the source code. What is the error?

Greetings

Carsten

Carsten: The EC command sequence is wrong. I suspect this is why the S10FanControl causes battery problems.

BTW, I've made a GUI version of the S10Fan.exe that runs in the system tray. If anyone is interested, the download link is a few pages back at

Will your program work properly on earlier versions of the BIOS?

Thanks

Frank: From what I can gather from the feedbacks that I've received, my program works with BIOS 58, 60, 67, 90. I don't have any information on others, but it should work with any version, provided that the BIOS uses the readouts from the EC 50h offset to control the fan. Perhaps you can try and let us know. Thanks.

Carsten: Thanks for keeping the top page updated for us. Could you add a link to my post at

http://forums.lenovo.com/lnv/board/message?board.id=IdeaPad_Netbook&view=by_date_ascending&message.id=3478#M3478

so that everyone is ensured to get the most recent build? Thanks.

BTW, I've released a new version that executes the EC commands in a higher priority thread.

Hi slash,

Carsten did post the link of your S10Fan prog in our forum... www.netbooknews.de blog in the netbooknews S10 forum section...so that many of S10e and a few S10 user give us feedback about that...

i personally will give it a try under the forthcoming week

my

S10e 4068-4WG flashed with S10 90 BIOS is still hungry for new progs like that...

I had a look at the system event logger, it still writes tons of messages, so that in months the event logger is full :) ,

if i have time enough  to take a look ,what could be done ... a patch that clears this thousands of messages before the system shutdown...could be possible easy little patch.. like clear system event log at startup or before shutdown... to keep the system clear...

finally good job  A-RI-GA-TO to japan...

sincerely KalvinKlein

Slash's GUI-version is not working properly here (S10e - BIOS 66). Battery not detected + LED backlight turns on/off.
