If the U410 has two RAM slots, why is it not possible to upgrade from two 4gb chips to two 8gb chips for a maximum of 16gb? What prevents the other 8gb from being supported?
Based on the spec of U410 the maximum supported memory is "8GB max/ PC3-12800 1600MHz DDR3, non-parity,
dual-channel capable, two 204-pin SO-DIMM sockets - * System automatically clocks down for processors with 1333MHz DDR3 memory controller". Based on this the maximum memory to be used in a system is dependent on the processor used. You may want to dig some more info on this issue, so head on to Intel's website and lookup your processor model number to determine the maximum memory that it is capable of addressing. And there are numerous questions similar to yours if you search their forum.

But, i think max mem is 16GB 1600Mhz when using i7 processor...

Here's the processor on the U410 I ordered:
It says "max memory size 32 GB." Obviously 32 GB wouldn't be possible because the motherboard only has 2 RAM slots, but with 2 8GB chips, 16 GB should be possible.
Based on the motherboard and the processor specs, I don't see any reason why 16 GBs wouldn't be supported in the model that I have, but the Lenovo specs say 8 GB maximum supported. I will look at some Intel forums like you suggested to see if there are any answers there. Thanks.

You're right the processor can support a maximum of 32 GB. But we have not read the note given in the 8 GB limitation. Here's the note: "Maximum memory capacity may require the replacement of standard component with largest supported component available. On systems, even though it is possible to physically install 4GB of memory, the actual amount of memory addressable by a 32-bit operating system will be limited to 3GB. This limitation does not exist with 64-bit operating systems.". Based on this it may be possible to use 16 GB if you're using a 64-bit OS.
I did read that footnote, but it's not relevant to me. This is a brand new computer with a brand new copy of Windows 8. It's a 64-bit operating system. The OS is not limiting my memory capacity. Honestly based on all the specs it looks like 16gb should be supported, so why does Lenovo say it isn't? A customer service agent in chat told me again that 8 GB is the maximum supported memory.

You maybe right and customer service is wrong based on the facts. Or we are missing some more info? Why not ask Lenovo's Tech support team? I think they are more knowledgeable than their customer support team.

I am an owner of a Lenovo u410 with an intel core i5-3337u which technically support up to 16gb of memory. I bought that laptop with a small 6gb of memory. 2 sticks of so-dimm pc3-12800 (ddr3-1600). since I am hungry in memory, so I decided to buy a dual kit of 8x2 so-dimm. If you look from cpu-world, this intel processor supports up to 16gb.
I just want to share my experience where I know lot of people seems to search for that answer. My answer is yes, the u410 with that cpu is compatible with 16gb of memory. Here is the exact model I bought on last "black friday" sales:
G.SKILL 16gb (2x 8gb) 204-PIN DDR3 so-dimm 1600 (PC3-12800) F3-1600-C11D-16GSQ
These sticks timings are 11-11-11-28 under 1.5v. Normally, good quality ram sticks with this kind of specs should work with that laptop & cpu.

It works! There are two ways to upgrade your u410. After insertion of ram you need to change at least one bios setting.

#1. By changing Optimus setting in bios to UMA you deactivate #nvidia-graphics-chip and got 15,5 GB RAM available.
#2. A second solution when you don't wanna disable nvidia chip is to disable #memory-remap in your bios setting. Doings this makes 15 GB of ram available.

You're a genius! This worked perfectly, but you do have to disable memory remap no matter what, I've found.
