Wrong battery used in IdeaPad U410 laptops?

2012-12-29, 6:12 AM

I purchased a U410 laptop yesterday. It's supposed to have a 59Wh battery as that's what it says in the product description as well as all the stickers. When i run some extensive hardware tests using software which graduate students at my university (Caltech), put together, this laptop battery seems to have a measly 44.134 Wh capacity. Does anybody else have a similar issue with the U410 laptop line?

Other hardware detection software like PC Wizard and some linux software brought me the same results.

Hmm. I found a whole thread on the exact same issue:

http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/IdeaPad-Y-U-V-Z-and-P-series/Wrong-battery-installed-in-U410/td-p/820689

Seems a lot like Lenovo is working on a bios patch to provide false information to consumers when they should be doing a mass recall. This also seems to be illegal. I'm going to run this issue by some of the ECE professors at my university and see if they can do some further tests. Very dissapointed, Lenovo.

I'm using HWInfo64 to diagnose my hardware.

Before I updated my bios, it showed a 44Wh battery, after updating to the newest version, it's showing a 59Wh battery. The battery runtime has not changed, though.

So I'm wondering: Since nothing has changed, which reading is the right one? From what I can gather about the discharge rate and runtime, I'd say it IS a 59Wh- and the new bios just changed what is reported.
