ideapad s10-2 harddisc lock

2012-09-21, 18:56 PM

Hi to all!

My daughter's pad has come up with the following message;

primary master wdc wd1600bevt-22zctlock

when pressing enter it then requests;

please input password for....the above code.

The pad is now 4 years old, and was purchased from her school scheme for her coursework. I have asked the school IT department to look at it, but they suggested taking it to PC world....can't see it being a massive problem and wondered if anybody could help.

Many thanks!

Welcome to the community!

This sure reads like the HDD has a password set via The machine's BIOS. If Western Digital is anything like Hitachi, then there is only one way to regain access to the drive... Remember the password. Barring that, the drive is useless. Sorry...

Regards.

Hi and thanks for your quick response!!

I kind of hoped that was NOT the answer, lol! My daughter is adamant she has never set a password on the machine ( although cannot confirm if one of her "freinds" in college hasn't ) The school are no use at all. As the school originally set the machine up with their own software config to use the school intranet would they have altered the harddisc password from new? What are my options, barring buying a new pad?

Regards

I think it unlikely that the school IT group set a HDD password. If a "friend" set it as a prank, now's the time to make it clear how serious this is. Again, if the WD is anything like a Hitachi, without the password, nothing can be recovered from the drive.

If the password cannot be remembered, you'd need to purchase a new HDD and reinstall the OS and apps. Hopefully, you've got a backup of personal files, documents, pictures, etc.

Regards.

Hi again and to add to the post above.....

Turns up that there was a password set.....when we enter the password, windows xp starts its start-up run but then goes down and the same error page re-appears. Ironically though, we had exactly the same problem 4 years ago with a thinkcentre pc, that had virtually the same symptoms, and ended up having the motherboard relaced. Coincidental? Perhaps....

HHD replacement with new OS? Not financially viable, in my opinion.....
