Yes, tried the settings in the AMD control panel as well. No luck.

can you please un-install the graphic card drivers and let windows install them automatically? then check if you can change the brightness..

Re: s405/s400 screen brightness issue after downgrading to windows 7

Same here. Unistalled, let win reinstall. Same results.

Anyone here try a dual boot install with Win 7 and Win 8 yet? Im curious if the following will work... After the brightness "breaks" in Win 7, boot into Win 8 and turn the brightness back up. Then boot back into Win 7 and see if the brightness level "sticks" or if it goes back to being dim. Has anyone tried this? If not, I will give it a shot... Just dont want to repartition and reinstall everything if its already been tried.

Also, to help some other people out... I read some of you formatted your drive and now are stuck without the ability to restore Win 8 if you went to Win 7 before you knew there was an issue. FYI, if you can get your hands on ANY Win 8 disk (doesnt matter if its Professional or the Regular version) and install it, your serial key for Win 8 is hardcoded into your motherboard BIOS. Therefore, if you have access to a disk, you can simply install and it will auto activate and install your pre installed key. No need to spend $90 or more if you dont have to.

Simply download the Win7 to USB tool from Microsoft (it will work for Win 8) and transfer the disk image to a USB thumb drive. Then boot from the thumb drive to install. Note: You will have to go into the BIOS to turn OFF UEFI and allow it to boot and install from a thumb drive.

Re: s405/s400 screen brightness issue after downgrading to windows 7

2013-01-23, 20:23 PM

Hi all,

I’ve faced the same problem with the maximum brightness level after downgrading to Windows 7. I tried all the possible ways:
- Different versions of graphics drivers from Intel;
- Different versions of Lenovo Power management;
- Drivers installed automatically or Manually;

Result is nothing. The screen is darker in Win 7.

And really the problem is not "if you can change the brightness...», really we can change the brightness. The exact problem definition is the following: S400/S405 display with maximum brightness level in Win7 palpably darker than with the maximum brightness level in Win8 with the all same settings in adapter and power management.

Also I noticed the following:
If you set brightness to 0 in win 7 it will fully switch off the screenbacklight.
If you set brightest to 0 In win 8 it will leave the brightness on a quite acceptable level.

Accordingly, if you increase the brightness to the maximum level 100% you get OK level in win 8, and get semi-dark screen in Win 7.

Please help.

I just checked IdeaPad S400 Notebook Drivers and Software section.
There are no any BIOS updates.

I raise the issue because when I used Windows 8 for a couple of days I set display brightest to 85 percent for easy and comfortable usage.

Now I set brightness to 100% in Win 7 and understand that this is not enough for convenient work.

Just a suggestion for you guys; I have been following the display brightness issue....

Stick with Windows 8, i.e. reinstall Windows 8. Purchase Stardock 'Start8' utility for $4.99. It puts back the Start menu and allows you to disable hot corners. And you can set to boot directly to desktop. And pressing the Windows key will open Start menu like in 7.

You can also disable the Explorer ribbon if you choose using another utility.

After you do this, you really don't see the Start screen anymore, or Metro apps unless you really try.

I was going to install Win7 myself but after the driver issue, this is the path I took and it's working out really well for me. Cheers.
