u510 wifi

2013-06-12, 4:11 AM

Lenovo u510

intel  centrino wireless-n 223x(updated drivers)

I keep running into wifi issues with this laptop, I've troubleshooted some but still I'm having issues with (limited connectivity) AND it would connect but webpages would not load.

for the first problem it was the power profile which i changed, I've updated the drivers on the laptop, and updated firmware on my router(which wont matter if i take my laptop to starbucks.. its not like i can update their firmware everywhere i go..).  It is still giving me limited connectivity(even when other laptop/ipod are able to use my wifi fine)

I recently bought this (owned for 2 weeks) and i'm so fustrated, i cant even work on things without the internet.  any help would be much appreciated.

Dear John_K

Welcome in Lenovo Forums

Please try the following steps.

1. Temporarily uninstall the Smart Wizard and disable firewall for a test.

2. Assure the SSID and passphrase is the same for the router config page.

3. Disable the Wireless network adapter in Network Connection window and enable it again.

4. Restart the machine in Safe Mode with Networking to check the result.

Let me know

Thanks

Alaa

Re: u510 wifi

I have the U510 and have had wifi problems since day one. I sent it away to fix the touchpad (it was terrible!!) and wifi. The touchpad was fixed, but they did not fix the wifi. I sent it away again, and the wifi is even worse.  All I do is enable/disable and network troubleshoot when I turn the laptop on.  After 20 minutes I give up, turn off my U510, and go back to using my old desktop.

This laptop has only functioned properly for 4 hours, and I've had it since December.

This computer is useless!!!  A laptop that requires an external mouse and internet cable is a desktop, NOT a laptop.

Lenovo: Have you figured out a solution to the U series wifi problems yet or not?  What are you doing to help your customers obtain laptops that actually function?  Is this a Windows 8 problem, and if so, can we return the laptop and have Windows 8 deleted and Windows 7 installed?

Hi all,

thanks for posting your concerns. I understand your frustrations towards this issue and would like to see if i can assist in anyway. As you may already know there are a number of things to consider when it comes to the wireless and I'd like to narrow down the issue, if you'd be wiiling to work with me for a bit. Based from what's posted here, I'd like to suggest the links below to start with. From there we'll try to narrow further the issue. Though I can't say for certain at this point what I'd suggest at the moment if you haven't updated your wireless drivers, I'd suggest to uninstall the current drivers you have reinstall the drivers from the link below. If the driver versions are the same please skip the update of drivers and follow on the with the other 2 sgeestions from the links below.

Re: u510 wifi

Thanks NINE, but tech support already had me do both of these things over the phone.

I found this today on an Amazon review by J. Woodward:

http://www.amazon.com/Lenovo-IdeaPad-43762BU-Ultrabook-Graphite/product-reviews/B0082PTAL0

"But, there is a design flaw in terms of the wi-fi. I was aware of an extremely common wi-fi issue coming from Lenova U series (includes this U410 and U310). People would complain that they have either 1) a disconnecting wi-fi internet problem 2) low signals until very close to wi-fi access.

My theory is that since the casing of the laptop is almost 100% thin aluminum, the metal casing is reducing the wi-fi strength. In other words, the wi-fi adaptor is like your cell phone trying to text inside a metal elevator casing- reducing the signal or losing it frequently. Also like when you go through a tunnel. Maybe the design flaw is because they are almost mimicking the mac's metal chassis and they failed mimicking on one key part... like allowing an opening for the wi-fi antenna....

Regardless- My love for this laptop will outweigh returning the laptop- for now- as I am currently purchasing an external wi-fi antenna USB. An antenna will test my hypothesis of whether it is the whole casing, which is the design flaw, or if the brand new network adaptor sucks (unlikely but possible).

Keep you posted.

Edit: 12/6/2012
Design flaw averted by simply adding on cheap external wifi adapter. Acts like an antenna to get better signals than many laptops. Yay!
I bought a CISCO Lynksis external wi-fi adapter for $49.99- even though on best buy I saw it for half off. I needed internet ASAP, so I went for it (I can always order the cheaper version, then return with receipt for the current to save 25$ once it arrives)- it works! I can even access my n network now. My download speed went from 0MB to 8.6MB; Upload speed from 0MB to 3.6MB on [...]"

This could definitely explain the problem with so many U series having lousy wifi.

Are there any U IdeaPads that don't have wifi problems--I want to exchange.

I purchased 5 Lenovo Ideapad U510 and 1 U310 for my office and we’ve had a horrible experience with the laptops getting disconnected randomly from wireless networks. I’ve installed all of the Windows 8 updates, reinstalled the latest Intel WiFi driver from the Lenovo website, verified that the power management settings are not allowed to turn off the WiFi adapter, insured that the driver is set to run at the highest power setting, tried multiple wireless N & G networks with strong signal strength. I still consistently get disconnected from the WiFi networks within one hour of reconnecting. I need help resolving this issue because I can’t just replace them at this point. Do you have anything that will help me resolve this problem? Is there a recall that can fix the hardware if it’s a hardware issue?

I just received my Lenovo U510 and experienced the same wifi issues. Have tried all suggested solutions that I can find and none worked. Another problem is the battery always get stuck at 94%.
