using ssd and hdd express cache in lenovo U410

2012-11-16, 6:17 AM

Lenovo U410 comes with 24 GB SSD and 500 GB HDD.

Lenovo claims that they use some express cache to get faster speed during bootup and opening apps.

Lenovo recommends clean install of ideapad system while upgrading to windows 8.

link:

Lenovo recommends clean install of Ideapad systems

My problem:

As I am doing clean install , I want to delete LENOVO partition. The technical support guy also told me in phone that I can delete the partition and create my own.

But how will I use ssd and hdd? In my laptop, the windows OS was installed in 500 GB hdd and

24 GB ssd was used for some "express cache" .

But if I delete all the partition, how will I configure such that 24 gb ssd is used? Because lenovo does not provide any software named "express cache"  in their site.

BUT they provide

"Intel Rapid start, Intel rapid storage

So does these rapid start and storage use 24 GB ssd aand improve my boot time?

Express cache is configured in intel rapid storage....it is easy to configure it.....by one or two clicks in intel rapid storage software...

U410 do not have hybernation is replaced by intel rapid start ...about 5- 10 min to configure (create on ssd new partition with id=84 run intel rapid start and configure times, chceck in bios if intel rapid star was discovered by bios)

Hi peter9898,thanks for reply. When I try to give 24 gb SSD for caching purpose to intel rapid storage, it says that it will delete all the partition and data in it. Now if I do yes, then will my "one key recovery" cease to work?

I mean where is this okr software stored?Because it starts even if OS is not booted. So is it in SSD or HDD? There is one hidden 20 GB partition in HDD.

And offquestion, as I saw ur specs, I want to ask that did you have problem with wifi driver issues OR any driver issue like bluetooth?

Because my wifi driver is Qualcom Atheors AR9285 and lenovo provides wifi driver for Intel,CyberTan and Liteon and not Qualcom. SO my wifi is also not working and I have to connect using LAN wire.

OKR is stored in hidden OEM partition on HDD not SSD, I think

After do what i wrote to you by myself my system still can boot to OKR but i have resized partitions i do not know if the restore proces to factory defaults will still work.

Software asks you if delete partitions on ssd i think,

My laptom comes without bluetooth i think due to wifi intel 2200 card. Sometimes they have problem to connect to my hotspot created via sony erricson xperia

Thanks for reply. I could get intel rapid storage/start to work.

As for wifi driver, niether lenovo nor Qualcomm are providing it.

The exisiting driver for Intel, CyberTan and Liteon (windows 8) which the Lenovo provides does not get installed. It gives error that driver for my laptop cannot be found. When I asked Lenovo guy, he says it will take 2-3 weeks to make wifi driver avaliable.

I dont know how will I take this laptop outside without wifi, I am using this laptop by sitting near the modem and using the LAN wire like a PC desktop.

I don't see anything happening when pressing Esc. Should I press it continuously, repeatedly or what?

And what happens next when it does respond to the Esc?

OK, I have Intel RST running, I can see my HDD and my SSD, I reformatted my 24 GB SDD to be sure there is sufficient space. iRST shows both drives correctly. In the BIOS express cache is enabled.

But iRST doesn't show the option to use the SSD as cache for the HDD. What could possibly be wrong?

Problem solved. Actually the U410 was configured correctly. :smileysurprised:

It appears that Lenovo delivers the U410 with 2 partitions on the HDD. The smallest partition (D: ) is only 24GB, which is exactly the size of the SSD!

I assumed the 24GB "drive" D was the SSD. My bad. :smileyembarrassed:
