Is the Yoga Slim 7 14APU8 compatible with Thunderbolt 3 eGPUs?

Hello everyone,

I'm considering getting the Yoga Slim 7 14APU8, specifically the 83AA000GCK configuration, which has two USB4 ports, which are listed as 2x USB4® 40Gbps (support data transfer, Power Delivery 3.0 and DisplayPort™ 1.4).

I'm buying a new laptop mainly so I can use an eGPU, and I want to make sure that it can support it. As far as I can tell, all Windows 11 laptops need to support PCIe tunneling as a requirement, and these ports are 40Gbps, which should be as good as it gets.

If it supports it, is there any major difference between using these USB4 ports and using Thunderbolt? Are there any issues, or does it just work exactly the same as a Thunderbolt port?

If anyone could confirm that this laptop can work with an eGPU and give any additional details, I would really appreciate it!

Thank you.

Product specification for the ports do not show TB support as usual requirement for eGPU so we really cannot guarantee that it would work for the model.

1x USB-C® 3.2 Gen 2 (support data transfer, Power Delivery 3.0 and DisplayPort™ 1.4)

2x USB4® 40Gbps (support data transfer, Power Delivery 3.0 and DisplayPort™ 1.4)

Unless fellow members can confirm on the similar model, better to check out eGPU forum sites if you do not have one handy to test.

Re:Is the Yoga Slim 7 14APU8 compatible with Thunderbolt 3 eGPUs?

Hello @Rodney_Lenovo  ,

sorry, but is there any possibility in getting a response to this question? It was a week since I asked it, and I would really like to have confirmation. Without it, I will not get the laptop, as I simply won't risk getting a device that will be useless to me.

I realise that eGPUs are a fairly niche use case, so I understand that contacting another team is necessary, but getting an answer to a question as simple as "does this USB port suppot PCIe tunnelling?" really shouldn't take nearly this long.

Thank you.

Re:Is the Yoga Slim 7 14APU8 compatible with Thunderbolt 3 eGPUs?

Apologies for the delayed response.

Checking on the smartfinder, Lenovo do not offer specific eGPU for option. The product specs list also shows one USB Type C Gen2 doesn't give any PCIe lanes, so there are expected limitation for eGPU set up and requirements. USB Type C Gen2 doesn't give any PCIe lanes. Please check the links below:

You may still however try before any plans of purchase hoping that it would work else to just bottleck on the bandwidth.

Re:Is the Yoga Slim 7 14APU8 compatible with Thunderbolt 3 eGPUs?

Hello Rodney,

thank you for the response. However, I am still a bit confused.

To clarify, I am not looking for an eGPU solution from Lenovo - I already have that figured out. I am merely wondering if this laptop's USB4 ports support PCIe tunneling so my eGPU can work with it.

I understand that one of the USB-C ports on the laptop is a USB3.2 Gen 2 port, which isn't Thunderbolt compatible and doesn't support this feature. However, it is my understanding that the other two USB4 ports do support it. Am I understanding it correctly?

Thank you again, I appreciate your time.
