Yoga C940-14 will not charge

Hello everyone,

We purchased three C940's last June and while all three have been showing signs of video problems (screen "shaking", Windows crashing and the last image remaining on screen after rebooting etc), one unit has decided to completely stop charging entirely.

I have two different Lenovo branded chargers that I use and neither will work in either USB-C port.  I've tried holding the power button 30 - 60 seconds and then trying again but nothing changed.

I found one forum last week that suggested pulling the battery and then plug in to see if the laptop will turn on at all, and that didnt work either.

Any suggestion on how I can try to get this thing to boot, or is it just dead at this point?

Thanks,

And that's where the call to a 3rd party vendor comment come from.  I'm not going to take this laptop to a shop just to pay to have them tell me what I already know, that the main board needs to be replaced.

I was simply posting here to see if anyone else had a suggestion to try other than what the 3rd party support recommended.  It doesn't look like it.  I've already accepted that I have a nice new paperweight and am already shopping for another laptop.

Welcome to the Community Forums @ Scott737431 !

Thanks for posting here!

Does the Yoga C940 laptop still lights up when plugged to its AC adapter/charger?

If YES, try charging it for 3 to 4 hours first then try turning it ON again afterwards.

Aside from that, see if the Yoga C940 laptop will turn ON by pressing the Novo button hole that's located underneath the device.

Make sure that it is OFF first before pressing.

Re:Yoga C940-14 will not charge

There are no lights at all.  Pushing the little button on the bottom does nothing either.

I spoke with one of the 3rd party support vendors linked on Lenovo's support site and they explained that they see a lot of DC In issues with the USB ports on the C940 and other "consumer" grade laptops like this.  He said the only option at this point would be to replace the main board, which is simply too cost prohibitive to do at this point.

I'll likely just have to purchase a different machine.

It would be advisable to get in touch with our Lenovo phone/technical support for further recommendations towards this especially if there's a possible hardware concern that would require repairs for it to work properly again.

Please click on this link to get their contact details and provide them the Yoga C940's serial number so that they can check its warranty entitlement as well.

Re:Yoga C940-14 will not charge

I would, but the laptop is a month and a half out of warranty.  I forgot to include that in my last reply that said I had contacted 3rd party support, but that was the reason I called them instead of Lenovo directly.

If there is a chance to have Lenovo work on this at a reasonable cost I would be more than happy to reach out to them, but being out of warranty like I am, I'm afraid I simply have a new paperweight on my hands.

Thanks for the update @ Scott737431 !

You may bring the Yoga C940 laptop instead to any local service providers near your area for them to check it on their end.

Make sure to contact them first to inquire about their store's policy when it comes to repairing out of warranty devices.

Re:Yoga C940-14 will not charge

This is probably too late for you, and it may be a similar but different problem, but it worked for me and may help the next person:

Problem and Troubleshooting:  My C940 14" stopped charging last night.  I tried 3 different PD adapters, all three of which worked on my phone and my other laptop.  It was below the Conservation Mode threshold, but I disabled Conservation Mode anyway.  I tried to run a backup but it got down to 10% by the time the backup was only 50% finished so I shut the computer down.  I took off the bottom panel (and USB shield) to see if there were any obvious blown components on the motherboard.  I was planning on going through all the large chips near the USB connector to look them up online and try to find a power delivery controller to replace.  I was also planning on hooking directly into the battery connectors so I could charge the battery with a laboratory power supply.  I could also run the laptop directly from a 7.5VDC AC adapter from digikey.  It would lose portability, but it would still be a functional computer.

Solution:  I ended up unplugging the battery, holding the power button for 30 seconds, and plugging the battery back in.  This is an old-school technique for resetting firmware settings and whatnot.  When I re-connected an AC adapter the charge light came on.  It seems to be fully functional now.

Thanks for posting this as it resolved my issue.  I thought I had tried that but the battery must have still been connected the first time.  The indicator light now comes on, computer boots up just fine, and battery is currently charging.
