Re: 1TB msata SSD in Yoga 2 Pro?

2018-02-19, 20:16 PM

Hi,

The performance numbers you posted in that other thread are about 10x what I would expect based on that SSD's published specs.  Those are better-than-NVMe numbers from a SATA device.

What am I missing?

Z.

I'm not familiar with Magician.  Is it providing some kind of memory caching - and the performance numbers you see are to/from the cache, not the  SSD?

The way I read the specs that's a max 600MB/s SSD.  It's connected via SATA, and even SATA 3 maxes out at 6Gb/s on paper.  So maybe 600+MB/s.

If a RAM cache can provide that kind of improvement, great - but one can imagine some workloads where the native SSD speed would rule the numbers.

I'm not saying you aren't getting those numbers, just trying to understand where they come from - and how they compare with other SSDs in other applications.

regards,

Z.

It's correct the Magician makes use of caching to improve the performance of day-to-day activities.
The result is a much better balanced equipment.

Performance Specs - Samsung 850 EVO 1TB SDD mSata (without Magician)
SEQUENTIAL READ
Up to 540 MB/s
SEQUENTIAL WRITE
Up to 520 MB/s
RANDOM READ (4KB, QD32)
Up to 97,000 IOPS
RANDOM WRITE (4KB, QD32)
Up to 88,000 IOPS
RANDOM READ (4KB, QD1)
Up to 10,000 IOPS
RANDOM WRITE (4KB, QD1)
Up to 40,000 IOPS
