A fix for the wifi connection drops in yoga 13

2013-01-01, 22:11 PM

I have posted this before in the wifi issue threads, posting it as a separate thread so that more people can see and fix this, since it is an easy fix but renders this otherwise good device unusable.

Here is a solution that so far has worked to fix random wifi connection interruptions / drops.
1. Bring up the device manager by searching "device manager" from the charms menu under settings.
2. Click on network adapters in the device manager.
3. Right click on "Realtek RTL8723A wireless ..." under network adapters. Click on properties.
4. In the properties box click on the advanced pane.
5. Inside the advanced pane set the following values to these parameters:
selective suspend: disabled (I think this is the only change necessary but I did the other 2 parameter changes as well, you can experiment with different choices)
selective suspend timeout: 60
WiFi config: WiFi
Click OK to save settings.

This seems to fix my drops and high ping times, but not the speed issues when walking around the house. The speed fluctuates like crazy and does drop. I don't seem to have issues, even with a Realtek based TP-Link USB wifi card.

Hi  agrajag42

Please try the following steps

Open Device Manger , Navigate to Network adaptors

Right click on Wireless adaptor click on properties

Click advanced

Click on Transit Power and changed the value to 5. Highest

Roaming Aggressiveness change value to Highest

Now save and exit, and restart the system to check

Do give this a try and let us know

Hope This Helps

Cheers!!!

On the Advanced tab, I only see

Antenna Diversity Type

Bandwidth

Selective suspend

Selective suspend timeout

WiFi Config

The driver I'm running is 9/4/2012 version 1021.2.904.2012

Realtek RTL8723A Wireless LAN 802.11n USB 2.0 Network Adapter

Is this what you're running?

I also don't see what he is talking about.

I also tired deleteing the wireless drivers and reinstall the ones from the website, but the driver version still stays at 1021.2.904.2012 from 9/4/2012 not the driver from 10/23/2012 on Lenovo's site.

I just tried that too, but it still states 9/24/2012 as well.

Re: A fix for the wifi connection drops in yoga 13

Can we change the title to "A partial fix for the wifi connection drops in the yoga 13 for some people"? That would be more appropriate.

I get the impression that this fix is designed to make the wifi adapter more robust to weak connections and eliminate potential power saving issues that might interfere with performance.

The laptop suffers from a combination of a weaker than average wifi connection (making it more likely that you will be in a situation with problems) and a propensity to choke when the data needs temporarily exceed the bandwidth of the connection.

Changing basic settings of the wifi adapter only affect the first problem. There has been nothing to address the latter.

If it were just the wifi adapter settings, I would post a separate thread titled "Use an external wifi adapter as a fix for the Yoga's wifi woes". But, in the other wifi thread I document that this is not a solution. It would be nice if people read back a few pages in that thread and either replicated or comprehended the testing I did.

I'd love to hear about a fix. I'm 8 days away from giving up.

Thanks so much for posting this fix!

In addition to the fix above, I also went to the Power Management tab and UNCHECKED the box "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power". Click OK to save settings.

Although the wifi still sometimes disconnects when the computer is sleeping, it now reconnects immediately without prompting, rebooting, etc.

My initial wifi problems were so bad that my Yoga even threw other connected devices off the 'net when it reconnected.

Things seem to be working fine now for over 48 hours.
