ANOTHER yoga 910 power problem, won't power on at all.

2019-05-12, 21:07 PM

This seems to be a common problem on the Yoga 910....makes me think it's a defect...I thought I bought the extended warranty/accidental damage, but can't find any documentation so guess I'm sol on that.

It's a yoga 910 - 13IKB model listed as 80VF. Intel I7, 256G SSD (not even close to full), 8G. running windows 10

It's my son's machine. He doesn't use it a lot and it was fine the last time he used it. The next day...won't boot up. zero. The light next to the charger is solid white when plugged in. It was charged overnight. When you press the power button the light flashes white for a second and the backlit keyboard flashes white for a second. Then NOTHING. No attempt to boot up, screen stays black and no lights are lit except next to  the charger. Tried unpluggin charger and holding in power, tried holding power with it plugged in. Held it briefly, held it for 60 seconds...nothing. Held in the the tiny little spot next to the power button, nothing happened but I kept it held in anyway. Nothing worked.

I wanted to remove the battery, but my tiny screwdriver is from an old iphone and just a little too small. I'm so impatient! Does anybody sell them in stores? Am I going to have to be at the mercy of the geeksquad?? There are other little shops around, but I'm afraid to try them.  It was the new model at the time of purchase. I had bought the yoga 900 open box but had trouble with it....Returned it and got a good deal on the 910 becaue they had no more 900's. I should have known not to buy it based on the experince with the 900...

How much is it worth to pay for a repair on this??

Help me fix it cheap !! Thank you.

Hi cinderella1!

Based from the troubleshooting you've done it is an issue with the motherboard of the computer. You can check the compatible motherboards here (https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/us/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/yoga-series/yoga-910-13ikb/80vf/parts?linkTrack=Mast%3ASubNav%3ASupport%3AParts%20and%20Accessories%3AParts%7CFind%20Parts%20Current%20Product), You can also use the part number and purchase it at third party online stores.

Should you wish to disassemble the computer and check its hardware. Here's the hardware maintenance manual (https://download.lenovo.com/consumer/mobiles_pub/yoga910-13ikb_13ikbglass_hmm_201609.pdf).

Regards,

Assuming you bought the warranty through Lenovo, you can check that here: https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/us/en/

Re: ANOTHER yoga 910 power problem, won't power on at all./ more info!

I took it to a local shop and he tried some things and told me it seems to be the motherboard. I ordered an enclosure for the SSD which I used successfully.

Today I noticed a minor change in the behavior. Here is the status

I took out the battery and plugged in the charger....zero lights..nothing

I put the battery back in and plugged in the charger, now the charger light blinks every 4 seconds. THE CHANGE is that the power light and keyboard backlight will blink on for a flash every 18 seconds AND near the power button spins for a second also...This continued until I held in the power button for 15 seconds. Then it remained off. I then pressed it again to try to power up, and it began the flash every 18 seconds again.

ALong the way I've held the power button in for varous lengths of time, no luck.

Called a Lenovo service center that is an hour away. The guy told me that this laptop has a separate power board that is not the actual motherboard. A lot of motherboards it is all in one. He says it sounds like it could be the power board. There seem to be 2, noe by the charge and one by the power button. His company only does in-warranty work, but I found another Lenovo authorized place that will look at it.

Could it be the powerboard? The guy I took it to does a lot of work on the computers the school system gives the kids, so he probably hasn't run into this type of machine too often. At least that's what I'm hoping....

Hi cinderella1,

Did you solve this problem? Mi mother's Yoga 910 13IKB is having the exact same issue. Tried the same things you did, and some other "solutions" I found online, and nothing worked... :robotsad:

Was it a powerboard or a motherboard problem? Or something else?

Thanks!

Hi, I've had the same problem. I purchased a Lenovo Yoga 910-13IKB on Nov2017 (2 years and 3 months ago).

Last week it didn't turn on anymore, there is a light in the socket where I put the charger and if I press the power button the key lights blinks every 4 seconds, but without any activity on the screen / fans, etc.

I sent it to an official Lenovo repair service and they sent me a budget of over 800€ to replace the motherboard.

The status of the laptop is in perfect condition, without bumps / damage ... I thought my problem was unique but I can see that more people are affected with the same problem.

LENOVO people should know about it, looks like it should be a defect of the MB in several users.

You guys are not alone.. I had the same issue on my Yoga 900, and I gave up already. I bought a Dell Desktop instead of paying $800 for replacing the motherboard.

Exact same problem here too - same model, same fail.  Only difference is I left it on charge on a macbook pro usb c charger overnight and it's higher current.  The more I look, the more I see this problem in forums + dead laptops on ebay with same fault.  Surely someone must know of a motherboard component that is failed rather than having to buy a whole new motherboard.

Mine has been so carefully looked after.  This sucks.  What annoys me more is that the problem doesn't seem to be limited to just the 910.  I see comments about 900 and 920 just the same.

Add my name to this list... Lenovo Yoga-910 with exactly the same issue that many people have suffered. Stops accepting power from the external power adapter via the USB-C port to either charge or run the laptop. The laptop will continue operating normally until the battery is fully discharged and then powers down. Laptop cannot be recharged. Laptop cannot be powered by external power. Battery health is great otherwise and still has amazing run times up until this point.

The laptop is 2yrs and 10months old when the issue first arose. I contacted Lenovo Australia and was told it was "end of life" (really after only 3 yrs from first manufacturer?) so they would not be able to fix it if anything had to be replaced. I advised the Lenovo Service rep that this is a common issue and a lot of people have had identical issues, and whilst he acknowledged that this issue had been heard of, he refused to acknowledge that it was a defect. As we can all see, anyone looking here on these forums attest differently and it appears it is very common for these units to fail sometime around the 2.5yr mark

The main charge circuit is indeed found on the main motherboard where you will find 7 surface mount MOSFETS and the ISIL power control chip (power routed through from the USB-C on a daughter board). Searching a few electrical forums you will find a few people who have had success in solving the problem by replacing the SMD MOSFETS but you will need specialised equipment to do this. Outside the skillset of the average hobbiest. It would appear that the MOSFETS used by Lenovo (worth only cents each) are unsuitable for the job and it is simply a design flaw unfortunately. Worse still that Lenovo is happy to leave consumers holding the bag after cheaping out on what are effectively inexpensive components, and worse that they kept shipping these and later models with a known problem.

So I have a perfectly great, still high-spec, laptop with a healthy battery that cannot be recharged or powered and is therefore useless. It cost close to $3000AUD to buy so in effect, after failing at 2.5yrs, it has cost me around $1000 per year to own. Considering it only received light use, not a great return on investment. After Dell dudded me on the XPS1330 back during the NVIDIA GPU issues of 2007 I have successfully prevented any friend or family member buying Dell ever since. I'll be adding Lenovo to that list of unscrupulous manufacturers. It's back to HP and ASUS for me.

@JudgeGrowler

FWIW, I found the daughter card on eBay for around $100US. Can't vouch for it as mine hasn't needed replacing.
