Black screen on boot Yoga C940 -14IIL

Hello,
Recently my Lenovo yoga turned off and now when restarted will only boot into a black screen. Cannot access bios setting using f2 during boot up or the novo button on the back, when pressed the Lenovo logo will appear for a second and then disappear stuck on a black screen. Win + shift + ctrl + B doesn't beep or refresh screen.
I've tried power draining and letting it fully charge then die completely.
Does it need a new SSD perhaps windows 10 is corrupted?

Hi there,

If there's no output to the display on BIOS, it's potentially a hardware issue. Microsoft has a guide that you can try: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/sbs/windows/troubleshoot-black-screen-or-blank-screen-errors-79bcd941-5c32-5da9-9a99-9ed1a53b0d94

Also, have you tried connecting the laptop to an external monitor? Does it work there?

Re:Black screen on boot Yoga C940 -14IIL

Yes I plugged in an hdmi cable through a usb-c adapter and there was no display, the screen on the laptop flickered but the display never showed up on external monitor.
I found this video of a clean boot on the exact same laptop that I have but it gets stuck on the black screen at about :10 secs in the video.
- although I have not tried to boot using a usb yet, but i'm wondering if i even can since I can't even get bios to display like he does.

Yea, if you can't get into the BIOS to change the boot sequence, you can't boot to a USB. If the Novo button and F2 (or Fn + F2) doesn't work, try F12 as well.

Here are some steps to try to perform a residue power drain:

  1. Unplug the AC adapter from the machine.
  2. Disconnect the battery. To do this, you'll need to remove the bottom cover then wiggle the battery connector from the motherboard (Hardware manual: https://download.lenovo.com/consumer/mobiles_pub/yoga_c940-14iil_hmm.pdf)
  3. Press and hold power button for 30 seconds.
  4. Re-connect the battery.
  5. Reconnect the AC adapter and try to turn on the machine.

If you're not comfortable working inside the laptop, I would first recommend doing the above steps without disconnecting the battery.

Hi

If you could dis-connect the internal storage (HDD/SSD) and try booting with a pre-prepared USB, then it may work thru the list of bootable devices until the USB is reached.

If you can include the full 10 character MTM in your next post please.

https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/gb/en/solutions/ht506581-lenovo-diagnostic-solutions-downloads

or more directly try ....

https://download.lenovo.com/pccbbs/thinkvantage_en/ldiag_4.42.0_windows_x64.exe

LENDIAGS.png

Running a Diagnostic may reduce the Time/Cost of any remedial work.

Try this, it only works for some people, but you may be lucky …

Shutdown PC.

Disconnect the AC power and do a Hard Reset.
Hold Power Button down for 1 Minute.
Wait 1 minute and reconnect AC power.

IF you have the resources available, this may be useful....

LENOVO Laptop = OFF
SECOND Screen = OFF
(Monitor or TV)

Add a connection to your TV or a Second monitor via HDMI.

With both OFF, turn on the (2ND) HDMI device,

NOW try powering on the Laptop.

If you are lucky then at least one screen
will illuminate.

Work from there to resolve any issues, EG:

Now try to access the BIOS by …

Turn it ON and rapidly press F2

Press the Arrow down key ONCE.

Next is the Enter Key.

Now press F9.

Press the enter key.

Finally F10 and Enter.

If in doubt please ask.

Re:Black screen on boot Yoga C940 -14IIL

I am facing a similar situation on my Yoga C940-14IIL. My screen recently turned black after a windows insider update most probably. I was able to connect my 2nd screen and it turned on. But when I shine my phone flash on the laptop screen I can very faintly see my display which tells me my display isn't damaged or the LCD isn't damaged.

How should I fix this? Uninstall the latest windows insider update?

Re:Black screen on boot Yoga C940 -14IIL

This could be the same issue that I have with my Yoga: Windows reduces the brightness to the lowest setting for no reason, and the lowest setting is backlight-off.  In that state, exactly as you describe, you can see the contents of the screen if you shine a torch at it.  Trying turning the brightness up to see if it makes a difference.  If not, it sounds like the backlight in your display has stopped working.
