Bluetooth 5

2019-01-07, 20:50 PM

The improvements announced for Bluetooth 5 (over 4.2) sound attractive, such as much greater range and lower power consumption.  This would transform the use of wireless headphones/speakers, etc.  I am puzzled why the current Lenovo Notebooks still seem to offer Bluetooth 4.2 whereas the later mobile phones have featured Bluetooth 5 for some time, e.g. the Samsung Galaxy 8 onwards?  Anyone know the reason for the lack of Bluetooth 5 in the Notebooks - perhaps a USB dongol could be used but this occupies a socket.

I suspect there's more pressure on smartphone makers to use the latest and greatest technology as soon as possible in their flagship products.

As for Lenovo notebooks, models with BT 5 are starting to come out. The ThinkPad E490 specs say this about BT support,

"One of the following, configurable by model:
• Realtek RTL8822BE, Wi-Fi 2x2 802.11ac + Bluetooth 4.2, M.2 card
• Intel Wireless-AC 9260, Wi-Fi 2x2 802.11ac + Bluetooth 5.0, M.2 card"

That suggests that the suppliers of wireless cards are a factor in the delay.

Other ThinkPads with BT 5.0 include E590, L390, P1, P52, P72, X1 Extreme and  11e (5th Gen). I'd expect many new "x90" models announced at CES will have BT 5.0 as well.

There may also be OS-dependent issues. For example, this disclaimer in the specs for the X1 Carbon 6th gen (early 2018) model, "Intel 8265ac card supports BT4.2 but is limited to BT4.1 by Windows OS." Perhaps Win10 has been lagging in BT 5.0 support.
