Bought Yoga 2 pro refurbished Few issues like heat...

2014-04-21, 21:06 PM

Hey guys! So I  had the surface pro for about a year but it not really being able to be used as a laptop unless on a hard flat surface really bothered me. I fell in love with the yoga 2 pro when I saw it a few months ago at best buy. I recently picked one up refurbished on newegg.com. So far I really like it but a few things keep me from loving it. The main issue I have is it gets kinda hot by the vents. This makes it really annoying to use in tablet mode as the vents are resting whereever you have the "tablet" on. Does anyone else have this issue and how is it fixed? Is it just my unit and I should get it replaced?

Also, What bloatware do you guys get rid of? Is there really any use to the energy manager?

Is there a way to easily bring up an on screen keyboard when in tablet mode but using the desktop? For example if I am playing a full screen game and want to type.

Lastly the fan seems to be running a lot as well and its somewhat annoying. Is this just how the yoga is or is there a way to fix it?

Thanks!

Next time it gets hot, open task manager and sort the processes by CPU usage. Then take a screenshot and post it on here.

I had this issue to find out iTunes was making my CPU act like ______. With a quick google searched, it was all well.

I will definitely do that! But it seems to always get hot when just browsing the Internet or watching youtube. Just now it got super hot playing the video game hearthstone but maybe that's to be expected

How is your fan profile in Power Options?  Is it set to active or passive?  I'd set it to Active for some better cooling.  But yes, it gets fairly warm vs. body temperature--that's not surprising given that it uses a desktop-grade processor (just downclocked).

I just set it to active to see how that affects it. It getting fairly warm vs body temp is fine however it gets almost burning. Are there no other fan settings one can do?

You were playing games with passive fan settings?  That would probably be why it got so hot.  Check out this review with some reference temperatures:

http://www.notebookcheck.net/Review-Lenovo-Yoga-2-Pro-Convertible.107620.0.html

When I was looking into getting another convertible (by Dell), the main reason I didn't is that it runs like 10C hotter than Y2P in the same kind of review on that site.  Uses the same Haswell processor, so it seems normal for these skinny laptops.

When using in tablet mode, I've been flipping mine upside-down such that the processor and fans are toward the top, and fan ventillation grills are unrestricted.

The Processor used in the Yoga 2 Pro is an Ultra Low Voltage Processor used specifically in Ultrabooks. Even the i7 Yoga 2 Pro are dual core processors not quad cores like normal i7 founds in larger larger notebooks desktop.

I use passive cooling for general use, as that throttles the processor when temperatures rise, but haven't tried it for gaming yet.  When gaming, I've been using Active, and it gets pretty warm, but I just point the hottest area upward (tablet upside down), and it helps.  For general browsing, mine stays comfortably cool to slightly warm.  I downvolt a bit and cap max processor power at 65% when on battery power, which has not resulted in any noticeable slowing down so far.
