C940 14" Not Powering On

2020-05-25, 0:15 AM

I was fixing an annoyance on my C940 (display hinge was a bit loose. Had troubles completely disassembling it, so I packed foam behind the hinge. Mission success.) As I was reassembling it, one of the fans was difficult plugging back in and I accidentally broke a 4 pin connector off the motherboard. Sucks, but I continued with reassembly since I wanted to monitor the temperatures. However I noticed it wouldn't even power back on. I know warranty is voided--I had already voided it within the first two weeks of ownership by replacing the thermal compound with Kryonaut--but a laptop shouldn't be unable to power on just because a 4-pin connector fell off. I have some hope because the charging LED lights up when plugged in, but it doesn't power on, so maybe something isn't secured tightly enough.

If it is dead, ouch. Not a fan of how everything is soldered on--that meaning I don't want to have to pay for a motherboard+CPU+RAM if the motherboard alone somehow died.

Looking for ideas. If none.. any estimates for the mobo replacement cost?

~edit~

Right, maybe I should've provided the specs. It's the model with the i7 1065G7 and 16GB RAM

C940 14" Not Powering On

I'd suggest to post a pic of the pin that broke to see if someone can identify it here. Probably already did but did you try the novo button to see if it powers back on?

No luck with the novo button. For an image, I grabbed one after some googling since I didn't want to open it up again so soon. It's the 4-pin connector on the right side.

Wish I could help but honestly don't know. Even saw your post in r/techsupport lol. Best I can say is to call Lenovo support and have a technician look at it and see if he can say what can be done to repair it/possible cost for doing so, as I'm unsure if anyone on here has enough C940 knowledge to know exactly how certain internal ports behave with certain tweaks done to it.
