C940 - BIOS Firmware update caused MS Bitlocker to require recovery key

2020-03-07, 2:40 AM

Subject pretty much says it all.  I'm providing this as a combination warning and as a confirmation from other users that I did indeed find the culprit of my Bitlocker issue..

Two days ago my Lenovo Yoga C940 asked me for my Bitlocker Recovery Key.  At first, I couldn't figure out why.  Tonight I decided to investigate and found that the night before I was asked for my recovery key, Lenovo installed Firmware 1.5.4.0.0, which I am pretty sure is a BIOS update.

Shout out to Lenovo in a big thumbs down sort of way: How about warning people before doing something that will cause Bitlocker to think there has been a security breach?  Thankfully I had access to my recovery key, but if I hadn't this Lenovo Firmware update would have essentially bricked my computer and made me reinstall everything.  Not cool.

So, has anyone else had this happen?  Did I find the culprit with the BIOS update?

Thanks!

I think there must be something more to it than a BIOS update. I have the C940-14 and have installed all possible updates, including the BIOS update from last month, and haven't been asked for my recovery key. Maybe this only happens with certain configurations? I have the 2TB SSD.

What is this 1.5.4.0.0? Latest BIOS version is AUCN54WW and no one had issues with it once it was released a while back. You and the other user reporting is odd since I checked and there are no new updates from updating both Windows and Vantage to check.

Are you referring to 14" or 15" version? I7 or i9?

Same issue. Never set up BitLocker. This is my first Windows machine in 15 years. Called Lenovo premium support and they said someone would call me back in 24 hours. Guess it’s back to Mac for me since Lenovo paid support is so terrible.

This is unrelated to the main topic imo but iirc you need to setup Windows To Go on a USB with Rufus, set the setting in BIOS to prioritize USB booting, I think you need to disable secure boot (not sure) and with that you should be set. Random video I found explaining the process: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qEOuqTHf8JI

I believe that the same thing happened to me.  The Lenovo Firmware 1.54.0.0 update was done last night and this morning, when I started my Lenovo Yoga computer, I first got a message saying "EFI PXE 0 for IPv4 boot failed" and then got the blue screen for BitLocker Recovery asking for the recovery key.  After searching on the internet, I figured out how to find my recovery key and now my computer is working again. But I'm not happy about this - it's consumed two hours of my time this morning.  And I'm concerned if this now means all of my data on my computer is being encrypted - which I don't need or want.

If you were asked for a Bitlocker recovery key, then your data has always been being encrypted.  This isn't new.  You can disable Bitlocker in Windows settings.  Just go to START and type "Manage Bitlocker".  If you turn it off, it is my understanding that your drive will be unencrypted.
