CPU Noise

2013-01-27, 19:59 PM

Many users have mentioned a buzzing/scratching/whining sound coming from the CPU (especially while under heavy load).  I understand that this isn't a Lenovo-specific problem, but rather an Intel problem.

It appears the processor's C3 state is to blame.  Would it be possible for Lenovo to add a setting in the BIOS that controls CPU Power Management?

Thanks.

You don't want the hotfix, that's an unrelated issue.  You want to add the registry key mentioned in the workaround and reboot, which tells Windows to disable some of the low power states.  To undo it you remove the key and reboot.  You can ignore the hotfix and the rest of the article.

CPU's don't make noise. No moving parts, and I've never heard of a CPU with coil whine.

Fans make noise, take a look at the Yoga 13 fan noise topic for instance.

It's the piezoelectric effect.  No moving parts required.

A quick Google search finds:

The problem is definitely not fan-related.  It's an electric buzzing sound that correlates with the load on the processor.  Based on my research, it's a known issue with certain Intel processors as they enter power-saving states.

If you have the Yoga (and this goes for other readers as well), try this:

  1. Turn off the computer
  2. Start it back up with your ear next to the keyboard (in a silent room)
  3. As Windows logs on, but before the fans start spinning, you might hear a scratching/buzzing/whining/ticking sound.  The best thing I can compare it to is the sound of an old hard disk writing data.  Additionally, you may (if you can hear over the fans) notice the sound when doing CPU-intensive tasks (Photoshop, for instance).

If anyone can reproduce this, please let me know.  If you don't notice any noise, it's possible that it's too high-frequency for you to hear.  Otherwise (if you have sensitive hearing, but still don't notice anything), please post the driver version installed for your processor.

Of course, there's a chance it isn't the processor.  But it's certainly not the fans, and it's certainly related to the processor in some way; there's a direct, noticeable correlation between the loudness/frequency/intermittency of the noise and CPU activity.

my yoga is buzzing too.

it`s rather irritating than constant fan noise especially in silent room.

if it`s possible to improve by bios settings, i really want to be updated and added these settengs.

Interesting... what was your indication that this hotfix is related to the C3 state?  Additionally, is the hotfix reversable?  Have you noticed a profound effect on battery life?

Ah!  I see now.  I'll merge the edit into the registry and report back.

Update: Unfortunately, this did not fix the problem on my system.  I reverted the registry to its previous state.

That's too bad.  I was hoping this would help and was curious how it would affect the battery.
