Disable (permanently) Microphone array on Yoga 920 - How can I do this?

2018-02-12, 21:57 PM

Ok, I know it is not preferred that Mic be turned off per the new OS'.  They want the ability to respond to your every whim even by voice.  However, this feature is not acceptable in secure areas.

On other systems, I have a switch on system that hardware disables the Mic.  On others, I 'plug its ears' by covering the Mic with an active random noise generator.

If I have the ability to permanantly disable the Mic array then this would be perfect.  At the least, where are the Mics located so I can cover them with noise.

Can I get info on both of these?

- Is there a hardware way of disabling the mic array (software can override software disable)?

- Where are the Mics located?

Thanks

If you just hit the F4 key, it'll mute the microphone and it'll stay that way though reboots until you tell it otherwise.

If you're really concerned, you can right click on the speaker icon on the taskbar, select "audio devices," click the "recording" tab, find the "microphone array," right click on THAT and choose "disable." It'll never work until you reverse all of that.

Thanks!  I appreciate this may sound good for many.  The Mics are not disabled doing this.

Sadly, that is software setting and any app can override it on a whim.  The goal is to prevent the system from getting usable audio by disabling the Mic array or, if I can find the Mics, cover them with noise emitters.

At least try the second solution. The only reason I say this is that I've had to help too many people who can't get software to work because of the disabled setting.  The mics are on the front of the computer. Two little holes on the front edge near the touchpad.

If any of this strikes you as a solution, please click "accept as a solution" as it'll send a free beer to me. JK

Thanks again.

I will have a look at the system when I get home.  "ANY software setting can be undone by software."  Our InfoSec team has that in their signature; that is how they feel about thinking software settings have any validity.  It will not be allowed at work until this is resolved with an electro/mechanical (only real) solution.

Then you'll have to open up the computer and disconnect the microphones from the motherboard. Tape over the holes doesn't seem to satisfy your IT department's directive as it's not an absolute solution.

Of course, that brings up a warranty issue......

Thanks lots don,

We have some active methods that may work without fully voiding warranty.  They deem active noise generators to be an acceptable mechanical solution.

The thing one guy has is a random vibrating thin film device. It is an active thinfilm (sticker) that vibrates in odd ways so noise cancellation cannot easily adjust to a constant noise.  From what I heard... the Mic gets a loud and constant whistle or hum depending on the version.  If I find those holes, maybe IT can add these to suit.  If these next to the trackpad, then; it may be an annoyance to me or the touch HID device.

The thing about disabling the microphone is that it's pretty easy to see if it's been re-enabled.
