How to update the hidden recovery partition in the Yoga 2 Pro?

2017-12-13, 19:24 PM

Hi,

So, when I started the Recovery drive, it searched and found no partition to save the system files on and it asked me to insert a usb 16GB which I did, and it did backup the system files using around 11 GB which is great.

Now, there's a hidden recovery partition 12.99 GB as you can see in the picture which for some reason the recovery drive didn't find it and it's showing that it's free but in fact 9 GB are used up and I would like to update that recovery partition by putting there the other 11 GB because it's very recent. If I open my laptop in recovery mode, onekey would ask me if I want to restore from initial backup. That initial backup I have no control over it and unable to update it. If i want to backup my system using onekey, it will say estimated image file 80 GB but I only want system files like when using the recovery drive.

I hope you guys understand me and that I haven't over complicated things. Thx.

P.s. I have so many disk 0 partitions, can I delete any of them? How can i find out, which one is the recent one from the last windows upgrade?

Hi clouds73,

Greetings.

Checking the disk management partitions, what you got is a typical UEFI Windows10  with One Key Recovery factory reset features using the Novo button as shown here on this discussion.

In a UEFI/GPT lenovo machine, this is the usual layout of the partitions:

1.) WINRE_DRV 1000MB OEM - this is the Windows Recovery Environment - this has it's own interface / it doesn't need the 7th partition to operate
2.) SYSTEM_DRV 260MB System - check this thread

3.) LRS_ESP 1000MB OEM- The third partition is the EFI System partition which is used for data storage for the Extensible Firmware Interface (EFI) interface
4.) (blank) 128MB MSR - The fourth partition is the Microsoft Reserved Partitionwhich is also used for data storage for the Globally Unique Identifier (GUID).
5.) Windows8_OS 884.2GB Primary - Windows 8 OS
6.) LENOVO 25GB Primary - this contains the Application and Drivers that are preloaded on the OS (the drivers listed on this folder are also available on the lenovo website)
7.) PBR_DRV 20GB OEM - this is your recovery partition - you will need to press theOne Key Recovery button to activate this partition.

You don't have to delete any of those partition. The first 3 smaller partitions are essential ones . 4th (C:) is your actual Windows 10 with all your programs and files. D drive is just a data file to place other documents and the 12.99GB last partition is to factory reset your machine back to its original image (this should not be resized else would be corrupted and may fail reset to initial back up using Novo button).

The option of creating a user's backup with your additional files can be another choice to revert your machine instead of a full factory reset. If you do not need entire 80GB to be backed up then just keep the 12.99GB untouched.

Hope this helps answer your query.

Regards

Hello, you can please try the DiskPart Command via the following:

Input “cmd” into Windows search box to open the Command Prompt.

    Then type “diskpart”.

Type “list disk” command to list all your hard disks in the computer.

Input “select disk X”, where is X is the number of the hard disk that the recovery partition on it.

Type “list partition” to show all the partitions on the selected hard disk.

Type “select partition Y”, where Y is the number of the recovery partition.

Then type “assign”: the system will assign a drive letter automatically.

As for deleting the partitions, generally speaking, you can delete the recovery partitions. However, you can't delete the Disk 0 partition 2, it's part of system partition.

Thank You Spidey101 for the detailed answer but still you haven't answer my question. Can I update that recovery partition the 12.99GB and how? Because clearly that partition is not updating and even after I upgraded the system, it's still 9GB.

Hi clouds73,

Greetings.

mentioned on previous reply:

"... and the 12.99GB last partition is to factory reset your machine back to its original image (this should not be resized else would be corrupted and may fail reset to initial back up using Novo button)."

Updating it thus resizing is possible in other means ( as example via third party software) but since it is a factory image, OEM had it designed to be unchangeable (to prevent users from accidentally damaging the backup initial image) and should not be changed unless you are willing to lose your One Key Recovery function.

If you are confident to have it without, then a clean installation wiping everthing out and customize your partitions as you see it fit for your needs (shrinking, extending, etc).

OKR do offer to create users backup for those who want to backup their personal files and image.

Take time to review your options before deciding.

Regards
