[LARGE IMAGES] Yoga 2 13 Fan not noisy anymore and CPU cooler , Operation cleaning !!!

2015-06-14, 11:33 AM

Couple month now, the fan laptop started to be noisy and hot!

Decided to sort-out

Bought 5 Star Air Duster:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Star-Duster-Compressed-Flammable-400ml/dp/B000O1HRHE/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1434278822&sr=8-2&keywords=air+duster

and Arctic Cooling MX-4 4g Thermal Compound

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0045JCFLY?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00

The result from idle

Idle: before 50C / 52C, now 37C / 39C

The result from Loaded

Loaded: before 55C / 56C, now 42C / 45C

And not any more this fan noise, still a little noise certainly due to the quality of the fan.

Please see bellow the operation wich took me no more than 1 hour

Thank you for taking the time to provide your detailed and illustrative how-to post. I'm sure it will help other members.

As zoltanthegypsy noted, please have a look at the linked knowledgebase article discussing large images in posts. As many members visit the community via mobile devices (phones, tablets), large images can be challenging both to load times and data consumption. To that end, I've moved your pictorial tutorial images inside a 'spoiler' tag so that members can have a quick load time, and then open the image sequence if desired.

Regards, and thanks again.

This is hardly a solution to the Yoga 2 13 problem.

While the air can could be the most logical solution for a quiet laptop, it's pretty clear that the problem here is not a clogged heatsink.

Removing the stock TIM (thermal interface material) on the other hands definitely leads to some improvement. I did it last months on mine and replaced with a silver compound and there's a slight decrease in idle-load temps, but not enough.

3-5 degrees less are not changing the thermal management settings, which leads to unbearable fan spins at certain CPU load and low temperature range.

I have reduced the temperature of by 10°C which has reduce the speed of the fan, so not anymore this noise (or not too much depending of your expectation).

I did few test with the fan and I discover than the space between the fan and the back cover is too narow and this generate the noise. When you take off the back panel and the fan still with the same speed there is no noise anymore, did you tried?

Hi. The general issue of loudness in this laptop is mainly due to the airflow caused by very high fan RPM. Maybe in your case there was a combination of dust, an error in assembly that caused more vibration and even a problem with the TIM.

What I mean is not that I deny any improvements on what you did, which I'm certain it's there because replacing the TIM with good thermal paste always lower the temperatures.

What I wanted to say is that even with good thermal paste the laptop is simply too loud. Thermal management is set to react to certain CPU percentages of occupation with specific RPMs (at least is what it seems to me), and this could be fixed only in software (driver, bios, an app, whatever).

Hi,

Correct.

This is why big corporation are struggling today. They are trying to deliver world class services and I have no doubt that Lenovo is trying hard to resolve all client issues. Nevertheless some basics and obvious services are not here anymore or has been reduced to the minimum (I Guess). It is pretty much like when the head doesn't speak anymore to the leg and vis versa: Nice and interesting vision and strategy (the head) with a team of people leading actions not aligned to the top vision/strategy due to  the lake of capacity and investment. (the leg). not a good background to resolve customer issues or to take time to really understand what's going one.

To be honest, I am not sure anymore if Lenovo care about the Yoga 2 13, nevertheless I am not sure what will be my next laptop. If I will buy another lenovo in the next 6 month time,  I may or not buy another Lenonvo ! because I will remember the annoying noise of the fan or the poor brightness of the screen, The bluetooth connection  not working, the poor WIFI connection or the lake of RAM, and on the other hand,  the fantastic screen I can flip, the  good HD resolution, The M2 slot etc... only G knows What will be my decision for the next ones.

I am not a techi and I am not sure how to resolve totally the issue, I leave it to Lenovo if they don't mind and If they've got time ?! :smileyindifferent:

Richard
