Latest BIOS update 4MCN23WW for Yoga 720-15IKB

There's a BIOS update for my Yoga 720-15IKB, dated 01.08.2017, version 4MCN23WW: http://pcsupport.lenovo.com/de/de/products/laptops-and-netbooks/yoga-series/yoga-720-15ikb/downloads...

The changelog says:

1. Update MCU to M2A906E9_0000005D_0000005E.
2. Modify SAMSUNG MZVLB512HAJQ-000L2 CTLE value.

Can anybody tell me what that means? Would be much appreciated!

MCU=microcontroller

The Samsung item is probably a 512GB PCIe NVme SSD.

Re: Latest BIOS update 4MCN23WW for Yoga 720-15IKB

I ran into the issue (Lag and freezes) described here https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Lenovo-Yoga-Series-Notebooks/Lenovo-Yoga-710-15IKB-Latest-Bios-causes-l... after upgrading the BIOS, the only solution for me has been to downgrade.

Thanks for the information! Good thing I didn't update it right away.

Yours is the 710 though.

The 24 version is now for downloads. I did, and everything seems to be fine. The fan noise annoying thou. It is coming on and off everything I open a new file. It was not like this with the 23 version of the BIOS update.

Perhaps they've re-enabled turbo mode for the CPU? The CPU used to have turbo mode disabled, so it won't go higher than 2.8 GHz, resulting in less fan noise.

Perhaps. How can I check that? Is there a special command to use in cmd.exe?

Easiest way would be to open Task Manager, go to the performance tab, perform some cpu heavy actions and see if the cpu speed goes above 2.8 GHz.

Alternatively, use a tool like ThrottleStop, which can also be used to re-enable turbo mode, should it still be disabled.

Re: Latest BIOS update 4MCN23WW for Yoga 720-15IKB

I just checked it. Ran statistical analysis and the CPU went up to 3.29Ghz. So, what now? Should I go to my BIOS settings and change this feature? I should I leave it alone? Sorry, I am not familiar with BIOS settings so I do want to mess up anything. The fan does not constantly run, but it sure comes on and off every time I open some new program. It is annoying, I do not understand why they brought this feature back. Maybe Lenovo has its own wiser reason.

If it annoys you, use ThrottleStop to disable the turbo. Just open the tool and there's an option that literally says "Disable Turbo". Check that and you're done. Limits the CPU to 2.8 GHz. Shouldn't make much of a difference for every day tasks.
