Lenova Yoga 720 Power Button Broken

2018-08-12, 20:10 PM

A few weeks ago, my Yoga 720 power button stopped working - the button is mushy and does not trigger a click as it did before. I am able to use the reset function on the left side of the computer, so most complications have been solved, but I cannot force shut-down the computer anymore, and have to carry around a paper clip everywhere. I think that there is some hardware problem, but how should I get my laptop repaired?

Is it under warranty?  I would call support.

I ALWAYS get the extended warranty on computers. Always.

Are you comfortable working inside of the computer? The power button is little more than a plastic tab with a nib on the back that actuates the real power button on the motherboard. If that nib dislocates or breaks off, it gets mushy or doesn't work at all. If that's all it is, some careful work with super glue could get it working, agian.

Now, if the actual power button has come loose from the motherboard, that's a whole different story and a lot harder to fix. But at least you'll know once you get in there.

If you're not comfortable working inside of a laptop or have never done so, then it's best to find a computer repair center or send the unit in.

I have this exact same problem, did you ever get it resolved?  If so, how?

Re:Lenova Yoga 720 Power Button Broken

Well, I went in and unplugged the battery and then plugged it back in. It turned on... But went into endless load screen... I let the battery run out because neither the power button nor shift-ctrl-del would get it to shut down. I tried holding them down for minutes, it didn't work. I came back later and tried to turn it on using the power button. It doesn't work (neither does the reset hole). I guess in order to power it on I need to disassemble it and unplug the battery every time -- not possible. If anyone has a way to replace the power button, a workaround, or a way to jerry rig the power button to get it to work, please let me know. Thank you in advance.
