Lenovo 910-13IKB Flickering Screen

2018-11-16, 9:20 AM

I have two Lenovo 910-13IKB (80VF002TAU) laptops both in black. They are both out of warranty as far as I can see. I am attempting to repair them myself. I have previous experience in laptop repair however this one has me stuck. Basically the main issue is a flickering screen.

LAPTOP A- Flickering Screen

LAPTOP B- Trackpad connector faulty, but no flickering screen.

So I did the natural thing and swapped the “good” motherboard from the laptop with the flickering screen to the laptop with the broken trackpad connector but good screen.

But it still flickers!

Here is what I have tried;

  • Swapping the motherboards over to prove screen good.
  • When doing the above, I have made sure all screws are tight and present.
  • Double, triple, quadruple checked that the screen connector was definitely snugly in its flip connector with the line on it lined up with the brown flip mechanism.
  • Turned off windows 10- Auto brightness feature
  • Checked graphics card drivers are up to date.

But it still flickers!

A few other symptoms;

  • The flicker is not movement based, I cannot force it to flicker by opening and closing the monitor abruptly.
  • The speakers make a popping sound sometimes when the screen is flickering
  • It happens sometimes when the Lenovo logo is up at start up.
  • It will not happen for hours on end and suddenly it will be really bad for a few minutes.

A couple of other things I noticed

  • I seem to be missing a rubber piece according to the service manual
  • I haven’t seen this piece in any of the 4 laptops I have here of the same model
  • There is a screw hole in the motherboard that has an arrow pointing to it however the service manual does not show it being used at all, and having it in or out does not seem to make a difference.
  • Resolution 3840x2160, 60HZ refresh rate

I am super stuck here guys so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!

This job is a puzzle for me so Id really like to get it solved!!

I'd have to see the flicker to be sure, but it's most likely a bad panel. You've pretty much ruled out anything on the mobo and the connectors. As it's happening on the Lenovo splash screen, that rules out anything Windows-related. To be sure, you can use the NOVO button to launch the BIOS settings screen. If the flicker continues with just the BIOS screen up, then you probably have a bad panel.

Hi Doctordon,

Thanks for your response.

I was 90% sure I had eliminated the bad panel from my testing.

I swapped the motherboard from the laptop with the flickering screen into a laptop that had a LCD panel that was working fine. Now with the motherboard from the bad machine the screen flickers. I hope I am explaining it without being confusing.

I believe the fault is to do with the motherboard some how.

I misread your initial post. When you said "it still flickers," I thought you meant the suspect panel with the known-good motherboard.

So, to be clear, the flickering follows the motherboard, correct? And also appears when you boot into the BIOS settings screens, correct?
