Lenovo 920-13IKB: Update bios from bios?

2020-06-27, 7:26 AM

My BIOS has gone bad - and now I need to update it from the bios (the OS isn't loading - so I can't do it from Windows).

What to do? Guess I need to use a USB stick with a download on it? But what are the steps?

Welcome to the Community.

I'm not exactly sure what "the BIOS has gone bad" means. What happens when you press the power button? Do you get to the Lenovo Splash Screen?

What happens when you press the NOVO button?

Pressing the power button: The Lenovo Splash Screen appear, but it keep on loading - so the OS/Windows is not appearing Pressing the Novo Button: Bios menu appear - tried system recovery - but it stood through the night just loading => No fix. Entering the bios menus - on the first screen lenovo name ect. is blank So I think, I have an issue with the bios - and need to flush it, to load a new one?

If you see the spinning dots under the Lenovo splash screen, the computer has passed POST and is looking for an operating system. I believe, if the BIOS is corrupt, the computer won't post, at all.

Try this: Next time you get to the splash screen, press and hold the power button for a full minute after the computer shuts off, then try to restart.

Sorry - I tried to press and hold the power button for 2 min. - wait, and then turn it back on. Same result: Spinning dots going in endless loop under the splash screen.... But thx for the input :-)

The next step would be to try to get it to boot from a USB stick. Since you can get into the BIOS screens, go there, make sure USB Boot is enabled and, from the Boot tab, ensure USB Boot (might be worded differently) is at the top of the Boot Order.

If you created a USB Recovery drive when you first set up Windows (Windows should have prompted you to do that), use it to boot into a recovery environment and see if you can't fix Windows.

Here is a guide for that.

And, if you didn't create a USB Recovery drive, here's how to do that.

Hi Doc, Thx for all your advice. I tried it all, but when booting with USB it says "preparing recovery" (translated from danish, so it might not be the exact wording you have in the english version). And then it just go into load loop all night. So - sorey- it's not a fix :-( In regards to my statement of the BIOS gone bad, I wrote that because on the first bios setup screen, it says: Product name: Invalid BIOS version: 5NCN38WW EC version: MTM: Invalid Lenovo SN: Invalid .... I think something is wrong, since it says invalid in the different fields. Best regards Rikard
