Lenovo C940 high CPU temperature is that normal ? Help needed

2019-11-26, 18:29 PM

Hi

i just got my C940 FHD, i7, 16 gb Ram, 512 gb SSD.

I have 3 questions:

  1. I noticed that idle CPU is app 1% so thats fine but idle cpu temperature resides between 36 and 42 degC rising in occasion when background app increases cpu load (which is to expect) temperature seems to vary very often being sensitive to temporary cpu load . Most of the time temperature is about 40 degC

But is it normal (ie do other owners of the C940 see the same behaviour) that idle temperature is between 36 and 42 degC and app 40 degC on average ? As can be seen on screenshot "No apparent apps running.jpg" temperature hit 93 degC (also cpu spiked at 100 % load probably at the same time, could be some update running temporarely)

  2. During video rendering (see screenshot "CPU load video encoding.jpg") cpu load hit 100 % and cpu temperature 97 degC

Is this what other users experiance too and is this normal ?

  3. The integrated pen looses 50 % battery after app 15 minutes usage and further 40 % after 15 minutes more. The pen charges in 10  minutes to 100 % though.

Is this normal ? I would expect the pen to last several hours from a full charge

PC is updated with latest drivers etc

Otherwise the PC is great

regards nolan

Well, there's not too much to say here, but 30-40s cpu idle temps are pretty standard for laptops.

Idling in the mid-high 40s in a room temperature background setting might be indicative of a slightly worse heat-sink fit, which will vary from laptop-latop. For context my c940 idles around 40's. Starting up from cold, it averages mid 30s to low 40s, if I've just run anything intensive it will drop to idle in the mid 40's.

If you really want, you can open the machine up and repaste the heatsink with a better quality thermal paste, but this is limited by the efficiency of the heatsink itself. Since the fans don't kick on until about 50C anyway, I don't think this will improve your idle temps much, it'll just reduce the time it takes to drop back to idle temps after a load.

What did you use before this machine? You can check idle temps on that too, unless it was a desktop or gaming machine where you could set fan controls, it probably idled around these same temps.

I prefer using a bamboo ink to the internal pen due to the size. The internal makes for a handy backup, but I never used it long enough to comment on the battery life.

Hi Qyygle

thanks for you feedback, much appreciated. I used a surface pro 5, didnt check the temperature although it became rather hot. Can you tell me what spike temperatures your c940 reach when on 100 % cpu load eg rendering video or the like ? I consider a bamboo or lenovo active pen 2, have you any recommendations regarding these 2 - what made you choose the bamboo ?

Do you use a screen protector on this device (glass not being gorilla grade) ?

Thanks

regards Nolan

At 100% load in benchmarks, it will hit high 90s before dropping to average around 70-80s. High cpu use spikes typically pushed the cpu to near intel's 100C limit before the fans kicked on to bring it down, but this is with 3Dmark benchmarking and the like. A windows update will be more gradual in temperature rise normally. When playing fallout new vegas, I average around 70-80.

I happened to have a bamboo ink since the pen was dual protocol, was using it on an HP that used n-trig previously. It doesn't support the tilt functionality I think AES 2.0 has, might try one of the newer ink pros if I find one. If you can get a lenovo active pen 2, that'll be cheaper I imagine. Both pens will probably feel similar, I've seen some reviews that noted the Bamboo had more diagonal line wobble.

Currently I have a matte screen protector on the panel (plastic) for the texture and glare reduction. It makes writing feel a little more like paper, but I think it's also introduced some more pen wobble. My hope is that over time, the protector will fully adhere to the screen and settle down the pen jitter, but if it doesn't I might take it off.

thank you very much. I think my unit is fine now, it seems to behave like yours. Do I understood this right; you see a temperature spike reaching 100 degC during your high stress test ?

Thanks

Right, the spike to 100 is registered under max temps in HWInfo, but the temperature readouts by RTSS during the benchmarks is around 70-80s

super, thank you very much ??. Now i know that my PC behaves normal and can put my worries aside. I just thought 100 degC spikes was not normal being very close to junction temperatures (cpu destruction). But my c940 behaves like yours

thanks

just a follow up; that means your CPU is throttling when reaching teperatures of the 100 degC you recorded ? You can see this when using hwinfo tool
