Lenovo Yoga 500 and SSD ! Great !

2016-08-01, 10:11 AM

Hello there !

just a quick message for those who would like to add a SSD HD to their Lenovo Yoga. I read some topics about this upgrade and was afraid if it was not working (because I read that some HD was not working...). FYI, I bought a Samsung SSD 850 EVO and it works perfectly (btw, opening the laptop is easy!). I installed Windows 10 Ent and the speed is awesome. I was not sure of the perf but now I can confirm it's the best upgrade I did on this laptop (increasing the RAM to 8 Go was not sufficient as the hard disk was the bottleneck).

HTH

Welcome to the forum!

Good to hear that you're pleased with the upgrade. The most effective way to speed up a PC is to switch from a HDD to SSD and to increase RAM to 8GB or even 16GB.

Hey!

Glad to hear you've had a good experience. I also bought a Samsung 850 EVO for my Yoga 500 and it's been great too. To check the performance you can use the bundled Samsung Magician software. I'd recommend installing it since it configures Windows for better performance for SSDs/ Check click the "Benchmark" section on MAgician as well to see your performance. Also enable RAPID mode from the software which improves speed even more.

@hausman I believe most SKUs of the Yoga 500 only support 8GB max (1 slot) so indeed trying to install anything more isn't supported?

I was speaking in general. If the system supports 16GB it's worth the upgrade because it reduces paging and other I/O to the SSD. Although SSDs are faster than HDDs they're still slower than RAM.

Do you try it? A single channel  DDR3L 16G stick is now avalable in the market

@hausman certainly in general, yes, I do agree.

@virgosun I think if you check the hardware manual of the current Yoga 500 the board chipset setup doesn't support >8GB RAM. I would like to be wrong on this though - 16GB RAM sounds good ;)

The Y500 has only one SODIMM slot. It's quite possible that when Lenovo intrtoduced the Y500 the largest capacity SODIMM was only 8GB, hence their 8GB limit in the HMM. But now that 16GB SODIMMs are available it's possible that the Y500 chipset can recognize them. Of course there's no guarantee.

When you replace an HDD with another HDD or SSD there's no need to purchase another copy of Windows. The license applies to the Yoga system, not to the storage device. You have two options at this point, (1) "clone" (copy the data, including Windows from) the old device or  a backup to the new device or (2) reinstall Windows from scratch. Option (1) is much easier. With option (2) the Windows license key that's stored in the system's BIOS is used to authenticate the installation.
