Lenovo Yoga 510 14ISK keyboard issues

Hi all

I recently purchased the aforementioned Lenovo model 2 and a half months ago (around May 5). While I love the tablet, I am currently experiencing keyboard issues.

When I press

Y key or the number 6 I get the number y and 6 (y6)

T key or the number 5 I get the number t and 5 (t5)

Hyphen '-' key or the left square bracket '[' I get left square bracket and hyphen ( [- )

Equals '=' key or the right square bracket ']' I get right square bracket and equals ( ]= )

Output in parenthesis

The caps lock button works, but it also mutes the sound on the device. The mute key works, but also puts the keyboard in caps lock.

The backspace button does not delete any previous text - it takes me to the Windows Lock Screen. Ironically, when typing my password at this screen the backspace key works (go fig).

When pressing the volume up key, the sound goes down.

When I press any of these keys [-]= alongside shift in an attempt to produce the alternative key output (e.g. capitalizing the key or alternative symbols) the key is unresponsive. Such as the case of t and y - there's no capitalization when holding shift or caps lock. Keys are not responsive when holding shift. This is prevalent when holding keys and the described earlier in the post.

I followed the suggestions listed at the following URL
https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/solutions/ht103985

And the solutions did not work. The on screen Windows 10 keyboard does work.

I am currently running the Creative Update that was released not too long ago. Surprisingly, when I update my machine, I experience several issues. Usually, the issues resolve on their own. However, after updating to Windows 10 Creative Update, the issues persisted.

I need some sort of guidance as far as what to do next.

Cheers

Edit

If it is a hardware issue, is it possible to clean the laptop keyboard or does this have to be serviced?

Re: Lenovo Yoga 510 14ISK keyboard issues

Hello Domineus

Thanks for using the Lenovo forums.

Try a static discharge for this, it may help to resolve the issue or at least get rid of any built up static on the motherboard.

(If the battery is internal, please just skip the remove/replace battery steps.)
1. Turn the unit off
2. Remove the battery and the Mains adapter
3. Press and hold the front power button for 30 seconds
4. Replace the battery and the Mains adapter
5. Turn the unit on as normal

If that does not work, then I would recommend a factory reset on the unit, this would rule out a software issue.

Note: Please back up all your data as running this reset will delete any data on your machine

1. Turn the machine off and press the recovery button which is located usually next to the power button. If you have a desktop machine you will need to power the machine back on and keep tapping the F2 key.
2. Use the arrow keys and press enter on system recovery. ( Desktop users can skip this)
3. Select “restore from the initial backup” and then “Next”.
4. Click “start” and accept the warning messages.
Length of time can vary depending on the speed of the machine.

If that does not resolve the issue, then it will be a hardware issue, so if these steps do not work I would recommend, that you call your local Lenovo support line for a possible service. Below is the link to the phone list where you can find these numbers

Hope this helps, let us know how you get on.

Re: Lenovo Yoga 510 14ISK keyboard issues

Question

Since it appears this model has an internal battery, wouldn't removing the internal battery to allow the device to discharge void the warranty?

Also - attempted a factory reset to resolve the issue. The keyboard issue still persists. It looks like this may be hardware based

Re: Lenovo Yoga 510 14ISK keyboard issues

If you read my post again, I have mentioned, if the battery is internal, please just skip the remove/replace the battery steps, as like you said, this could potentially void the warranty.

Try the discharge, and if that doesn`t work, then as the issue appears after the factory reset, it will likely be a hardware issue.

Hope this helps, let us know how you get on.

Re: Lenovo Yoga 510 14ISK keyboard issues

As I previously indicated both steps did not work.

However, as I mentioned in my initial post, the keyboard issues actually occur with driver updates. For instance, prior to updating to Creative Update, the backspace key issue was not present. Updating to Creative Update resulted in a backspace issue I described in my first post.

On factory restore, the backspace issue is not prevalent. Updating to Creative Update, however, resulted in the backspace issue I described in my first post.

I don't doubt that there's some hardware issues at fault. But given the above, it also sounds like a software (firmware) issue as well.

Re: Lenovo Yoga 510 14ISK keyboard issues

Right, in that case, do the other issues appear with the Creators update present, or have they been there before?

If they have, then it will be a hardware issue, as from what I can see, the unit should be compatible with the update, asper post: https://support.lenovo.com/gb/en/solutions/ht503655

I would recommend that you get in touch with your local Lenovo support line in order to organize a repair.

Hope this helps, let us know how you get on.
