Lenovo Yoga 710, 710-15ISK electrical hiss/buzz during CPU load or screen redraw

Hello all,

I bought a Lenovo Yoga 710, model 710-15ISK, brand new from best buy a week ago and I started noticing something super annoying. This laptop has the I7 processor, 256gb SSD, 16gb ram, HD 520 and GeForce 940mx.

Outside of the constant hum from the fan, my laptop makes a sporadic and intermittent electrical scratching noise or whining sound every time i scroll (screen redraws) or if I load a program like chrome or word. I've heard terms such as coil whine or piezoelectric effect? I am not sure, but it is quite noticeable and quite annoying!

It sounds like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jOgFPlS_b1s the sound is loudest right in the center of the keyboard, at least for me; the buzz in the video was provoked by loading software and or scrolling up and down on a page or document

From what i was reading, it sounds like it has to do with the CPU and the ACPI driver; another possibility is the Intel HD 520 graphics.

Anyone know what is going on, or how to fix it? Thank you in advanced!

Re: Lenovo Yoga 710, 710-15ISK electrical hiss/buzz during CPU load or screen redraw

Hi there, Theo –

Thank you for writing in to the Lenovo Forum - happy to have you here today.

From what I know, it's either the system board (AC port) or voltage regulator (Intel CPU Chip) is buzzing.

If it's AC Port, you can just hear it when you place your ears near AC port. You could probably get a system board replaced. Sometimes when a power adapter is connected, you could even hear power adapter buzzing.

If it's Intel CPU chip, probably there's not much you could do. It is affected since the 1st gen of Intel Core i processors and known as manufacturing defect. Therefore, it is considered normal (throughout different OEM). If it buzzes too loud, a workaround is to disable CPU Power Management, drawback is having shorter battery life. Maybe you could try and see whether any thermal compound leak out of its contact?

Update us how it goes.

Re: Lenovo Yoga 710, 710-15ISK electrical hiss/buzz during CPU load or screen redraw

Thank you for your reply.

I checked it out, and it is NOT the AC port as the buzz or hiss persists being plugged in or on battery.

So I guess that leaves the Intel CPU chip... how does one go about disabling the CPU power management then? I did not check for any thermal compound leak as I did not want to void the warranty as of yet. But this unit is brand new, not older than 1 week.

Thanks!

Re: Lenovo Yoga 710, 710-15ISK electrical hiss/buzz during CPU load or screen redraw

I would suggest you to visit the nearest Lenovo service center ,  report your findings since your system is brand new one & doing anything would void the warranty.

Update us how it goes.

Re: Lenovo Yoga 710, 710-15ISK electrical hiss/buzz during CPU load or screen redraw

I am having the same issues with the yog 710 that i bought less than 2 months ago. There seems to be a  coil while coming from under the enter key area. The noise only goes down if i switch to power saving mode. If I run it during balanced or high performance mode, it is a loud enough/annoying hiss .

Any fixes yet?

Re: Lenovo Yoga 710, 710-15ISK electrical hiss/buzz during CPU load or screen redraw

In response to customer reports of buzzing fans or fans that make physical sounds like scratching on Yoga 710-14ISK and 15ISK systems, Lenovo has released a solution.

Please contact Lenovo Service and reference Service TIP # SF16-I0026. The system will need to be serviced under warranty.
