Lenovo Yoga 720 not capable to update to Windows version 1803 because of drivers?

Hello, I am trying to update toe Windows version 1803, and have encountered inumerable errors, no matter what I seem to do. Speaking with a Microsoft tech. via the live chat, he said that Lenovo has not released the drivers necessary to run version 1803, there I continue to get errors. I feel this is not the case, because I am pretty sure others have updated to 1803 that also have the Yoga 720. Any advice? Thank you.

Re: Lenovo Yoga 720 not capable to update to Windows version 1803 because of drivers?

Use Lenovo Vantage (available in the Windows Store) to update all of your drivers and especially your BIOS before updating Windows. Always works better if you have the most up-to-date drivers and BIOS available. That's not saying WIndows Updates won't still have issues or wreck. But there's a lesser chance if you keep everything current.

Thank you for the advice. According to Lenovo Vantage I already have the latest drivers, but still get failed update installation. =(

Re: Lenovo Yoga 720 not capable to update to Windows version 1803 because of drivers?

I've been able to update to 1803 without problems. You can try going to the drivers page here to see if there are newer drivers: https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/us/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/yoga-series/yoga-720-13ikb-type-80x...

In the past, Vantage also wouldn't tell me about the newest bios update (version 2.07), I had to go to lenovo's website to find it and install it manually. It also doesn't help that it's so difficult to use their support page to find drivers... you have to go to the "top downloads" section and click "show all" to see the drivers, pretty unintuitive.

There were some updates for the Bluetooth and Wifi drivers, you can get them using Intel's Driver & Support Assistant. You can use it to detect if there is a newer driver for intel components on the Yoga 720.

I think you can also try going to the settings app > update & security > troubleshoot > windows update. If you could tell us what some of the error messages/codes were we could probably help you better.

Re: Lenovo Yoga 720 not capable to update to Windows version 1803 because of drivers?

Hello, thank you very much for the information. As far I know, I am up to date with my drivers, at least I think I am. I have used Intel's Driver and Suport Assistant tool, and says I am up to date. Lenovo Vantage says I am up to date too. I have Bios version 2.05, which i am pretty sure is the latest.

When trying to update to 1803 either by ISO file or through the Windows Update option in settings, it will install, then blue screen giving me the error PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA. I think this has to do with a problem with RAM? Then, when I get back to my desktop, it get the error message: "0xC1900101 - 0x20017

The Installation failed in the SAFE_OS phase with an error during BOOT operation"

Also, there are a couple cumultaive updates that never can install., such as KB4343897. They get to 30%, then blue screen and I believe I get the same error message. I have tried installing the cumulative updates by disabling and re-enabling WU service, and all the other code involved, using powershell (Admin), and /sfc scan, and other commands, but no success whatsoever. Hours upon hours have been wasted trying to get this to update. I have even remote control access to Microsoft level 1 and 2 employees, but not success. =(

Re: Lenovo Yoga 720 not capable to update to Windows version 1803 because of drivers?

No one knows? Why do the devs of Lenovo never seem to make any responses? This is quite ridiculous. No matter how many hours of troubleshooting I have done, I have not had any success. Paying almost $1300 for this laptop I would expect better customer support here on the forums.

Re: Lenovo Yoga 720 not capable to update to Windows version 1803 because of drivers?

It's a community forum, not the official support chat. We do have some support specialists that drop in, but this is mostly user-to-user. Dell, HP, et al have much the same setup.

ANYway. Your error could be RAM, could be an issue with the SSD or it could be conflicting software, such as a security suite or virus scanner.

Then, when I get back to my desktop, it get the error message: "0xC1900101 - 0x20017

The Installation failed in the SAFE_OS phase with an error during BOOT operation"

If I read that correctly, you're having issues installing 1803 on both your 720 AND a desktop?  I'd either uninstall whatever you're using for virus/firewall/etc.. not disable, but uninstall.. and try again. If it still fails, you might consider restoring the computer to its original image. That's probably what support would have you do, anyway.

That's my best guess.

Re: Lenovo Yoga 720 not capable to update to Windows version 1803 because of drivers?

You can get a hold of Lenovo employees online by following this link: https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/contactus

During business hours (I think business days 8AM to 8PM), you can tell them about your problem through a live chat system, and they will guide you through with how to troubleshoot the issue. If you're logged into your lenovo account, you should be able to access this link: https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/us/en/livechatpc

You can also do the following to reset your bios (I've been told to do so by support, and it solved my problem even though I didn't think it would be related to the issue I had):

1. plug in your laptop while still on

2. shut off your laptop

3. unplug the laptop

4. use a paper clip or pin to poke the novo button (on the 13 inch model, it's a hole on the left side that has a refresh symbol next to it).

5. You should feel a click, and it will automatically start the computer. You will be shown a menu of options. Select boot to bios.

6. load fail-safe optimized defaults

7. try the update again

You can also follow the steps at this link to see if any drivers are causing the problem: https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_10-update/driver-verifier-tracking-down-a-...

Good luck!

Re: Lenovo Yoga 720 not capable to update to Windows version 1803 because of drivers?

Doctordon, thank you for the info. I am referring only to the 720 15.6" laptop.

Is there a way to uninstall Windows defender? That is the only anti-virus software installed on the laptop. Also, I have formatted it multiple times, but no success.

hegerber, thank you for the information. I actually have the 720 15.6". Does the 15.6" have that little novo button? I will try chatting with them some time, and try downgrading the BIOS. It's worth a shot. Which version of BIOS should I downgrade to? The first version released? If so, where may I download it? I have been manually typing in the link to download different versions, and that has worked thus far, but version 2.04 is not availble to download.

Also, I tried the driver verifier and followed the instructions, but when I reset my laptop, it would not load past the splash screen. I had to do another format. Ha.

Update: I spoke with a Lenovo tech support via chat, but this person was unfortunately no help at all. I explained my entire situation, and he ended up suggesting I format my laptop, even though I explained to him two times I have already formatted multiple times, AND I told him that I literrally just finished formatting the laptop right before I allowed him to connect via remote access. What the heck? Smiley Frustrated I hope all their tech support agents are seemingly not this incompetant.

Re: Lenovo Yoga 720 not capable to update to Windows version 1803 because of drivers?

You shouldn't need to uninstall Defender. It's third party suites that can cause the error.

The fact you're having trouble getting past the splash screen might indicate a hardware issue, though not definitely.  If you CAN successfully boot, run Lenovo Vantage's hardware diagonistic routine.

Yes, the 720 has a NOVO button.
