Lenovo Yoga 910 screen flickering issue

Hi there,

 

I bought a Lenovo Yoga 910, Intel Core i5, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD 4K laptop in September 2017. I've had no major issues with it until the past few days.

 

What is happening is that when I'm watching a video, on seemingly any player, after a while the screen starts going crazy, it's fairly hard to describe so I'll link a video to it.

Once that starts to happen, any time I mouse over anything the screen flickers, and anytime I open anything (e.g. an internet tab/the start menu) it goes back to the original freak out style. If I manage to minimise everything and sit on the home screen with the mouse not touching any icons then the screen is fine. 

 

I feel like there was an update fairly recent prior to this starting, so whether that is the cause or not I'm not sure.

 

I'm a standard computer user, so for information that is required I'll likely need pointing out how exactly I go about finding said information or performing said task if it's not pretty basic.

Hi Stablility,

 

Welcome to the Community Forums.

 

Let us first check the BIOS version you currently have.

On the search box below, type msinfo32 

BIOS version level should be ver 39 and up (highlighted link for reference). Make sure that you follow the read me guideline if you need to upgrade it.

 

Click on the search box again and now type in winver to check the Windows version.

If you feel that it is update related then you can try to review the dates of the updates closer to the date you noticed the issue. Then you can decide to system restore from a restore point / date.

Hi, thanks for the response.

 

Have checked what you've suggested and BIOS version is 39 which I gather is fine. Windows version 1803.

 

I've now looked at the recent updates and they were "Feature update to Windows 10, version 1803" on 20/5. And "Security update for Adobe Flash Player for Windows 10 version 1803 for x64-based Systems" on 21/5. 

 

The issue started 2-3 days ago so I imagine it could coincide with either of those updates, but would be difficult to say for sure.

As you may have suspected about related update issue, you can try the steps mentioned here:

Other users have actually had more than a flicker causing black screen. 

Our intention here is to uninstall the update KB4103721.

 

Going on to safe mode with networking here.

Under Safe Mode, open Control Panel > Programs and Features. Click View installed updates from the left panel, select the update you want to remove, clickUninstall

Hi.

 

So I uninstalled update KB4103721 as suggested. 

 

Unfortunately no success. The issue arises once I go fullscreen on a video and seems to start when I exit fullscreen. After that I need to restart the laptop to revert to normality.

Hi Stablility,

 

Greetings.

 

Checking for the dates of installed application such as  IObit Advanced SystemCare 11 , Spybot - Search & Destroy , Acronis True Image etc . have the newly installed apps and programs uninstalled.

 

Else, we can try to get a less aggresive step such as system restore to a previous known working restore point/date if you do not have any encrypted data as an option.

After trying many alternatives, I found that google chrome's hardware accelaration feature (under advanced settings) was causing the problem. I have now disabled that feature and the problem seems to have stopped.

Mine seemed to work for around a week with no issues then the problem started up again.

 

I'll try disabling the hardware acceleration feature & will report if this worked for me also.

There's a new version of Chrome rolling out, this week: 67.0.3396.62. I haven't done a deep-dive to see what all has changed, but it's worth noting for issues such as these.
