Re:Lenovo c940 - Charging via USB-C?

2020-03-06, 16:34 PM
@Zoltanthegypsy You wrote "Generally, using a higher wattage Lenovo slim-tip charger is not a problem. The laptop only draws what it needs." Does this mean that using for example a usb-c Lenovo 130W charger for ThinkPad would not charge a C940 14 faster than its native 65W charger? On my side I can say, I've tried the charger of the new ice lake Spectre. It's also 65W and it also outputs 3.25 at 20V. I didn't notice any difference with the stock charger regarding to speed. But I'll choose that one because it's noticeably smaller, thinner and lighter, and I travel a lot. And I mean, really nomadic travels, with big backpack and all what you need for 4 seasons. It's also way more beautiful as a charger. Another mod said, using not stock chargers can void the warranty. Could you please articulate that? Thanks

Hi,

I've exactly the same setup and can confirm your experience ( Yoga sometimes crashed, doen't react while dock was pluged in, etc.). Now, after fw update, it works so far .... but I can't charge the YOGA using the rear TB3 port via dock (foremost works - little oringe light shines). Unfortunately I can't remember whether it was possible before firmware update.  Does it works in you setup?

Re:Lenovo c940 - Charging via USB-C?

I have a Yoga C940-14IIL Laptop (ideapad) - Type 81Q9 Model which charges fine with the power adapter provided.   In order to provide a second charger I had purchased an Anker PowerPort Speed PD 60 and a Anker Powerline II USB C to USB C 2.0 Cable (6ft) USB-IF Certified.  This combination does not work directly with my laptop.  However, after reviewing this thread, especially the comments about the charger cable combination I decided to tray a couple of combinations to see if any work.  The additional equipment I had to work with included:

  • A Belkin USB-C Multimedia Hub (5-20V 3A)
  • A USB-C charger and cable I got with a Red Hydrogen One phone, 5V/9V/12V 3A/2A/1.5A
  • A Lenovo ThinkPad TBT cable 40G P/N SC10M59509 that came with my work Lenovo ThinkPad Doc
  • A generics USB-C Cable that came a Plugable USB-C DisplayLink dock

The following combinations worked:

  • The above Anker PowerPort connect through the Belkin with all of the 4 cable options
  • The Red USB-C charger that came with all of the 4 cable options

Clearly there is something with direct interaction from the PowerPort Speed PD 60.

Re:Lenovo c940 - Charging via USB-C?

I just received my 15 inch Yoga 4k and I'm pretty disappointed that the laptop won't charge over USB C. I am running a docking station that is intended to power higher powered devices (certified for Macbook Pro 16 inch) and now I have to run a second cable to the laptop to power it? I would think that any premium laptop in 2019/2020 should offer charging over USB C given the nature of single cable connected docs. Hopefully this is something that will get fixed from a firmware update.
