Lenovo yoga 710 14" Screen Flickering

For some reason my screen on my laptop spontaneously flickers and basically looks like it's having a seizure. I've tried updating the display driver and updating the system and neither worked. I've also tried the solution that requires you to go to safe mode to disable "Windows error reporting" and "Problems Report and Solutions" and it still hasn't stopped flickering. I bought the laptop about a month ago and the flickering started about a week/week and a half ago. I'd strongly prefer to fix it at home and I really don't want to have to return it to Best Buy to buy a different laptop. Any suggestions/solutions?

Re: Lenovo yoga 710 14" Screen Flickering

Hi there, Dan              -

Thank you for writing in to the Lenovo Forum - happy to have you here today.

Does the flickering happen using an external monitor as well?

You should try and update the BIOS to the latest version. Click here for latest version.

Update us how it goes.

Re: Lenovo yoga 710 14" Screen Flickering

I am very glad to know I'm not the only one experiencing this issue.

This has been happening since the moment I got the computer out of the box. This alone would be enough to drive me crazy. But, it's even more maddening when considering that my Yoga 710 is actually a replacement unit sent by Lenovo to replace a defective Flex 3 I bought earlier this year (which also had unbelievable screen issues). To say that I'm frustrated is an understatement.

I was able to grab a video of the screen flickering issue, and was able to switch between multiple apps to show that it's not simply one specific application causing the issue.

(Click here to watch the video if the inline video isn't working for you)

Here's the status of where I am in terms of fixes:

  • BIOS is up to date
  • All Windows Updates are installed
  • All drivers are updated from the Lenovo support page and from the Device Manager of Windows 10, with particular focus on pertinent drivers like ACPI; Intel and Nvidia display drivers; etc
  • I've experimented with updating display drivers directly from the Intel & Nvidia support pages.
  • I've experimented with turning off the Intel driver to leave only the Nvidia driver, and vice versa.
  • I've experimented with rolling display drivers back to older versions.
  • I've experimented with rolling Windows 10 back to older versions.
  • I've turned off the "change brightness automatically when lighting changes" under display settings

Other notes:

  • Occurs when using battery and when plugged in
  • Occurs when battery is charging and when battery is at full capacity
  • Occurs upon a fresh restart, or after the system had been in sleep mode
  • Occurs when using the Yoga 710 in laptop mode or tent mode. (I rarely use it in tablet mode, so I can't speak to that)
  • Occurs when using an external display (extended desktop and duplicate display) - both flatscreen monitor and an LCD projector

So: what next? This should really go without saying (because I imagine one's laptop is rather important for almost anyone) but I simply cannot be without a functional laptop. And I promise that if I need to start looking for another new unit (my third in less than 12 months) it will NOT be a Lenovo.

TJ

edit: added one more attempted fix that I had forgotten.

Re: Lenovo yoga 710 14" Screen Flickering

I have not tried using it with an external monitor but I did realize that my screen doesn't flicker at all and works like normal when I am away from home. I read somewhere that the flickering might be caused by some other electronic devices that are sitting nearby the laptop when it's on. As for the BIOS update, I tried clicking the link and it says that my laptop is not able to perform the update.

Re: Lenovo yoga 710 14" Screen Flickering

Have you tried moving to another area of your house to use your laptop? Because when I moved to the other side of my house from where I normally work at, the screen was fine.

Re: Lenovo yoga 710 14" Screen Flickering

Oh, yes. I sure have. The issue persists no matter what room of my home, what room of my workplace, what coffee shop I frequent, and even in the air mid-flight. It also persists whether the laptop is on a table, or on my lap. Whether fluorescent lights are on or off, and whether or not I cover the light sensors with a post-it. (Those are all things I've tried).

Re: Lenovo yoga 710 14" Screen Flickering

Just this last week I started experiencing the screen flickering again, and at anywhere I sat at home.  I'm not sure what's causing it still but for some reason it works perfectly fine at school.  My girlfriend has the exact same model that I have and she doesn't experience any of these problems with hers.  Any idea why?

Re: Lenovo yoga 710 14" Screen Flickering

Greetings,

After continuing to deal with this issue on and off (including a particularly busy time in my workload) - I went through a period of several weeks where the issue subsided virtually completely. Now, the dreaded screen flicker is back with a vengeance.

Additional Notes (to followup from my detailed post above)

  • When the screen flickers while using the camera (e.g., Skype, Messenger, etc), the camera turns off and I have to manually turn the video back on in the program. This, to me, implies that whatever is happening is not just the screen flickering but something more wide-ranging.
  • What has changed in recent days? In short: nothing. I've checked the logs for Windows Updates, Windows Store updates, etc. and nothing has installed or changed recently.
  • I'm using the same apps and programs that I always have, so nothing is new there either.
  • The flickering continues to occur even after I shut down, restart, or wake from sleep.

Lenovo Staff, please watch the Youtube video embedded in my earlier post on this thread to get a sense of what I'm describing.

As a reminder, this is my second Lenovo laptop in less than a year. The first was replaced by Lenovo after experiencing a (different) unexplainable display issue. Should I expect all Lenovos to be so poorly built/designed?

Re: Lenovo yoga 710 14" Screen Flickering

This afternoon, I talked a Lenovo technician out of sending my Yoga 710 in for a hardware fix, because I knew this is clearly a software issue. Instead, the technician asked me to reboot into Safe Mode w/ Networking to reinstall display drivers. (This also allowed me to confirm that my wireless adapter doesn't even work in Safe Mode w/ Networking... but that's a different topic for a different post).

Anyway, once booted in safe mode, I uninstalled the display driver and all its files, and then reinstalled the driver. I then rebooted into normal mode.

The result: no change, whatsoever. The screen continues to flicker to its heart's content.

I tried again, booting in safe mode. Uninstalling the display driver and its files. This time restarting in safe mode before reinstalling the driver. Then rebooting into normal mode.

The result: a waste of an hour of my life. The screen flickers, and flickers, and flickers.

This led me to another full evening tinkering through various possible fixes...

  • Turn off Adaptive Brightness? Nope.
  • Disable Link State Power Management? Nope.
  • Disable USB Selective Suspend Setting? Nope.
  • Disable the NVIDIA driver? Nope.
  • Disable the Intel Display driver? Nope.
  • Disable the Intel & NVIDIA drivers to use default/basic Microsoft Display driver? Nope.
  • Disable the Touchscreen completely? Nope
  • Contact Lenovo Support Multiple Times? Nope.

----

A quick reminder of the timeline of my experiences with Lenovo.

  • February 2016: Purchased a terrible Lenovo Flex 3, with immediate display issues that rendered the unit almost completely non-functional.
  • March-May 2016: Tried every single fix in the book, to no avail.
  • May 2016: Agreed to send in my Flex 3 as a test unit for further study, to be replaced by a new Lenovo Yoga 710 14"
  • June 2016: A communication error on Lenovo's side kept me from receiving my new unit for over a month.
  • July 2016: My new Yoga 710 machine arrived. This is the unit I'm currently using. Immediate display issues (different from what I experienced with the previous machine) renders it almost completely non-functional.
  • July 2016 - January 2017:  Trying every single fix in the book, to no avail.

Summary: When it comes to Lenovo, the only experience I've ever known is nearly A YEAR of pulling my hair out.
