My lenovo's battery has bit the dust, but a replacement would be $100. Can I be certain it is just the battery and that if so would the best route to take be purchacing a replacement battery from the lenovo site and performing the opperation myself? Thanks,

Welcome to the Community Forums.
You can follow the steps here in the hardware manual page 22 for operational charging. Manually, if you have it connected with a good charger, the battery indicator from blinking amber should turn white after 3-4 hours being plugged and without powering the laptop. If it doesn't them, most likely a battery issue.
Other steps you can try here specially if the diagnostic tools like Lenovo vantage would say that the battery is failing.
Here is the article how to search the battery part number and to order it:
Operation is easy as you can follow the steps suggested here in the hardware manual page 35, removing it after opening the base cover.
I hope this helps answer your query.
