Low Memory Warnings and Random Restarts

2014-04-28, 18:06 PM

Hello.  I have had my Yoga 13 for a couple of months now (I bought it refurbished from the Lenovo Outlet).  It is running Windows 8.1, with 4gb of ram.

Since I upgraded to Windows 8.1, which is practically the entire time that I have had the system, I have been getting low memory warnings and software crashes related to this.  When getting these warnings and crashes I am usually running IE (maybe 4 - 5 tabs) and 2-3 pdfs in Adobe Reader.  It only has 4gb of ram, but in my mind, this cannot overload the memory on this system!

In fact, I just got the low memory message now ("Your computer is low on memory.  Save your files and close these programs: Internet Explorer") and I am only running IE (4 tabs) in the foreground.  I don't think that this is an IE issue, because this problem is even worse, when I am using Chrome.  That is what prompte me to switch to IE.

When I check in task manager right now, it says that I am using 81% of memory. IE is using 300mb (which seems very excessive) and there are other programs running in the background - none are using more than 50mb and most are using less than 20mb.

The other part of this problem is that when I am working normally (again with a few IE tabs open and a few pdfs open), the system randomly restarts itself, with no error message or anything.  All of a sudden, the screen just shows the login screen and Windows starts as if nothing happened.

I am really at my wits end with this and was hoping that someone else had solved this issue or something similar.  Let me know if you need anymore information about my system.  Thank you in advance for any help.

Most likely the RunSwUSB service, I recommend disabling it.

Order your task manager by memory usage. Then post a screenshot here.

Hello,

Thank you very much for the responses.

I am very sorry for my delay - the system had gotten to the point where it was restarting itself as soon as I logged in, so I could not try your suggestions.

This morning, I turned it on and tried Mattcoz's suggestion of closing and disabling RunSwUSB and so far, so good.  The system is running as it should and I have not had a single low memory warning.  If I start to get warnings again, I will come back and post a screenshot of my memory usage, but for now, the problem is solved.

Again, thank you both very much for your responses!
