M.2 type 2280, which Laptop?

2016-01-29, 8:34 AM

Hello,

I would like to know which Lenovo yoga laptop can use SSD M.2 type 2280.

I am curently use the yoga 2 13 (I3 4GB ram) and it is very good because I have got my normal 500GB harddrive in and another 500GB SSD in the M.2 type 2280 connector.

I would like perhaps to buy another yoga with better spec (8GB Ram) and be able to transfer my M2 2280 to this new laptop.

Thanks

Richard

Hi RichardTheKing ,

Greetings.

On your question (which Yoga can hold M.2 2280)

If you click on link provided , it would show you the Yoga 2 13 inch list with the Model and Machine number IPbook  .

Technically , this is the best way to review specifications of hardwares via Machine /Model Number so you would be sure about the parts .

Then match it with the parts look part page for part number and details . Use the details for the device that you are interested in. This I propose as a hardware technician.

Yoga2model.PNG

Example : (lets get the first one with 59429088 showing storage 256 GB SSD) then check in the parts lookup page

partslook1.PNG

We can now double check using either part number 16200610 for the SSD or specific manufacturer number MZNTE256HMHP  verifying that it is using a Samsung 256GB PM851 NGFF M.2 SSD HDD MZ-NTE2560/000

You may use this guide to the one you already checked and likewise to share to other members of the community how to utilize the Machine Number for checking specifications of systems they have in mind on a hardware perspective .

Goodluck to your endeavors.

Hope this helps you further on checking further details.

Regards

Hi RichardTheKing  ,

Greetings.

You may verify the specification of each model of the Yoga 2 13 based on its Machine number :

Click on the link for the listing of Models machine numbers here .

Most likely your current system would be the same (see the sticker or use your Seraail number to get the Machine type. Just keep your Serial Number confidential.

Those showing SSD most likely have that feature . Verify it by machine number under parts lookup site   .

Anything particular that you have in mind ,

Update us how it goes.

Regards

Hi RichardTheKing  ,

Greetings.

I was unable to find an ipbook specific for FR / UK aside from the US /Canada for now.

Best tool that we can use to check on listing for specifications on hardware details is the parts look up page .

Using the mahine number on the parts look up page would allow us to check on M.2 SSD features available on your locality.

Regards

Thanks again for your help.

Overall there are not anymore a lot of laptop with a M.2 SSD connector type 2280 and the a normal hardrive, at the exeption so far of the yoga 2 13 (non pro) and the lenovo ideapad Y700 (gaming laptop).

I will carry on during my spare time to check the listing.

Thanks again

Richard

You haven't specified any requiresments. So I'll add in all macines with an optical drive.

Get an 2,5" <> M.2 adapter and then a "caddy" for the optical bay. I have a non Lenovo machine which was without ODD but had an empty space for it.

So I mounted a 240 GB secondary SSD in with a "caddy" bought cheap on eBay. Works very well. I have no knowledge of "caddy's" taking M.2 directly but the mentioned adapters should be easy to find. Beware though they're not 1to1 rewiring adapters as 2.5" SATA drives (and laptop DVD drives for that matter) are 5v devices where as M.2 are 3.3v devices. You can get two type of adapters. PWM regulated (many components) or analog regulated (few components). PW is more efficient but if quality is crap then there's potentially longivity problems. Analog regulation using just a single LDO regulator (and capacitors for smoothing) on the other hand are very robust but not as power efficient as excess voltage in converted to heat instead of amperage. In a laptop running on battery that *may* be noticeable compared to a PWM.
