Re:New Yoga C940 Overheats When Charging Idle

PSA to everyone experiencing this issue which should be every owner of this laptop as its a Window's feature.

Look up disabling "Modern Standby" or S0, that's what's causing the issue and should just require a registry edit to disable S0 and enable S3.

Open command prompt in admin mode and enter reg add HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Power /v PlatformAoAcOverride /t REG_DWORD /d 0

Remove this entry in regedit to regain modern standby (although not sure why you'd want to cook your laptop TBH.

This issue is affecting most Dell's, Lenovos, and I believe Acers or Asus laptops, spread this as its clear the manufacturers are not interested in fixing this.

Mods, please sticky this as this info can save people's laptops from possible damage.

Will this registry fix work on a 740 yoga also?  My fingers are seriously burnt!  Just when I think they are getting better then they burn and peel all over again.  This is ridiculous!

you can check if you have modern standby enabled by opening up command prompt and entering the command "powercfg /a" without the quotations. It can't hurt to give it a try, you can always navigate to the location manually and delete the registry edit if it doesn't end up doing anything.

Do you need to do disable the Intelligent Cooling feature in Lenovo Vantage utility in addition to adding this registry key?

Not that I know of as I don't think Intelligent Cooling does anything when the laptop is sleeping. I did turn it off and just use the quiet mode however.

Disabling S0 and enabling S3 using that registry edit command should be enough to prevent your laptop from getting burning hot while it's sleeping.

Re:New Yoga C940 Overheats When Charging Idle

Just want to add my name to this list. My brand new c940 15 inch uhd laptop also has overheat issues when in standby and charging. Have a video of it from the second day of ownership of it cooking at 151 degrees. I am having multiple other issues though. I will try your solution OP, but think I am going to initiate a service request as my batter wear is increasing drastically day by day and I think this issue, as well as the battery drain while off or in hibernation to be the culprit as well. My laptop will lose 75% of its charge when off overnight. Then I turn it on, it will show a random percentage above critical, then just shut off.

I did notice when I had the computer that the fan runs loud, but I returned mine due to the battery draining badly when lid is closed and unplugged. It was down to 30% by morning. I could leave my yoga 920 unplugged with lid closed for almost 2 whole days, open up and still have somewhat of full battery

Has anyone attempted the solution as of 3/2021 with the latest version of Windows? I'm afraid the latest version will screw my computer up. I will try it anyway. I literally created this account today because my computer fans go full turbo when i plug in, battery drains like i can practically watch the icon reduce.. did not have these problems when i first got the device... i stopped using it for a few months. fired it back up, updated it, and now it's a jet engine. really frustrated because i loved this **bleep** thing and need it for drawing again! btw, is there a discord or something for yoga users or something?

I would recommend that the Lenovo engineers check out the Dell XPS laptop and how they solved the problem, and reverse engineer the solution to the Lenovo. The Dell had the same problem: temps would get very high during charging and you could hear the fans running full blast. Then Dell put in a 'Cool' setting in their Power Management section, which totally eliminated the issue of overheating during charging. It was so bad with the Dell I would only charge with the laptop off, figuring if it wasn't on, it wouldn't overheat.

It's in the Dell SupportAssist software:

  • SupportAssist is a proactive monitoring software with automatic failure detection and notifications for Dell PCs and tablets. SupportAssist is free of charge, secure, and streamlines traditional support routines.

It's incredible how adding that option in their software totally solved the issue. Why all these laptops naturally tend to overheat during charging I don't know. I believe it has to do with how Intel programmed their CPUs.

So on the Dell, you don't have to get into the BIOS to configure the option; you can access it in the Dell app in Windows.

I could kiss you!

I have a Lenovo A530 that has that **bleep** Modern Standby on it nd I could not figure out how to disable.

The fan would run randomly, throughtout the night in 'sleep' mode. USB would stay powered on. Thanks to your fix it now enters S3 as it should and says 'Firmware does not support S0 (thank god).

I owe you a beer if I ever see you.
