One or two SSD slots on Yoga 2?

2013-11-25, 0:53 AM

Having upgraded my old Yoga 13 with a second SSD drive, I'm wondering if the new Yoga 2 can accomodate 2 drives?  That would make a big difference in whether I buy the 512gb version of the 256gb version.  Anyone know if the Yoga 2 will take 2 drives?

There's only one slot in the Y2P.

Bummer... should have made sure before!

If I make USB recovery media, plop out the 256G drive and replace it with a 480GB drive - will the USB restore a system to that or will it balk at some partitioning not being there?

The better SSDs now come with a cloning application.   I would recommend getting one of those.

Or Maybe a tool like Acronis to do a full backup and restore. I've used it for drive upgrades in the past and have been very happy with it for that and regular backups too.

IIRC what I ran into in the past with Lenovo is a very restrictive environment where they would only recognize certain configurations and models.  The Samsung drive used in the 512G model appears to be pretty much not available worldwide, even the Lenovo high-end model is apparently not shipping if I read the forum entries correctly.  I don't want to get myself into a situation where I would end up with a machine that is not restorable for some reason.  The UEFI requires partitions to have very specific tags, from all I remember in the Y13 it's not reivial to set up from scratch,  When I tried to restore from original CD with 2 drives present in he system the process did not complete.  I had to restore with exactly the original 1-drive configuration, then I could add the second disk.  Seems like this here is uncharted territory...  I'm not sure I want to take a $400 gamble

I took the plunge....  ordered a Crucial M500 on amazon.  If it doesn't work out, I'll return it.  Will post my results.  Comes with an mSATA to 2.5" SATA adapter tha I can then hook up via USB - slow but enough to clone the disk if a restore from backup to different hardware or a fresh install won't work.

I got the 480GB drive and installed windows successfully!  I simply swapped out the drive, booted into recovery (USB media) and reset PC - no issues at all.  I had no data to transfer since it was a new PC.  I ended up with a  Windows partition of around 200GB and a Lenovo partition of about 220 GB which was empty - that surprised me a little, since I thought they usually put all the drivers on a small Lenovo partition.  Since it was empty I deleted it and expanded the c: drive - everything is good!

Could you please describe steps of changing the SSD in yoga 2  and also how did you take the back up. I have to buy 256GB version as 512GB was not available for long time. I want to upgrade the SSD now.

Could you describe how to boot with USB media? I'm trying but I can't select USB in the BIOS... What kind of media and what was installed on it?
