Physical lock for Yoga Ultrabook.

2013-01-11, 3:52 AM

I have this machine since Christmas and have no major issues aside from the annoyances of learning Windows 8 and touch gestures etc. But I do miss the Kensington lock slot, as I sometimes have to leave briefly in classroom or library . during a bathroom break etc. Is there any way to physically lock the machine? It would be helpful ins lowing down though of course not entirely preventing) a theft.

The systems for online tracking, locking  and recovery look promising, but are not perfect as the software says the machine is 1200 miles away at present. And it would be good to prevent a quick grab during the break in classes as I have done for many years with older IBM and Toshiba  models. Thank you for any suggestions you may have.

Hi

Welcome To Lenovo Community

  • Patented hardened steel Security Blade slides through your laptop's hinge to create a secure anchor point.
  • 4-digit combination lock closes around the security blade.
  • 5-foot coiled hardened steel cable loops around a table or chair leg to complete your setup.

Do give this a try and let us know

Hope This Helps

Cheers!!!

Do you know if the lock sold on the Lenovo site would work for this? Or does this also use the Kensington slot format? Also what is the cooling vent made of and coult is be used with some fom of lock?

Thank you for your help

Has anyone tested the Griffin Techsafe lock on the Yoga 13? Was curious to know because this lock seems not to fit the Mac Air and it might not fit alot of ultrabooks such as the yoga. Does Lenovo recommend something else?

Could someone from Lenovo to give a clear and useful answer to this fundamental question?

Lenovo sells a lock
http://shopap.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary/controller/e/myweb/LenovoPortal/en_MY/catalog.workflow:item.detail?GroupID=460&Code=57Y4303&category-id=19E53DDB3AA94DC79929C42FF06FBF21&hide_menu_area=yes
part number 57Y4303

Is it compatable with the Yoga? Yes or no?

Myself, I am interested in whether it is compatable with the Yoga 2 Pro, and if not, what is ?

TIA

(btw, the  Griffin one reportedly does not work with some other manufacturers' Ultrabooks. There doesn't seem to be any data about it with Lenovos)

That's a regular T lock, which requires the standard T lock opening in the laptop, which Y2P doesn't have.

I also didn't even know Y2P doesn't have it until I tried to lock Y2P with my old T lock. It was quite a disappointment because it's a pretty standard feature in most laptops...

I suppose the link from 2nd post is probably the only lock that can be used for Y2P. But seeing what a narrow gap Y2P has between the screen and the body, you'd have to be VERY careful when using it. Or slide it between one of the hinges and the screen. I saw some posts about cracked screens in the product reviews in Amazon link...

Thanks for the reply.

I wrote Griffin and they said that have not made/sold that product for several years, so it  is safe-to-say that they haven't made an extension specifically for the Yoga 2 Pro.   If one of the existing extensions fit the Y2P it would just be a happy coincidence.

.

There is an identical-looking product by pny:
http://www3.pny.com/Portable-Laptop-Locking-System-P3227C541.aspx

I wrote them too and they said they had no idea whether it works with a Yoga 2 Pro.

So that leaves us back at square 1 - just buying one any trying it.  I am in Asia and it would cost me a fortune to do a 2-stage mailing to get one here.  Does anyone in US or Europe feeling like trying either product ?

They are both out there on ebay/amazon/ebuyer.  PNY's shop is down, but they use other outlets e.g. in the UK http://www.pny-europe.com/w/Where-To-Buy/?sel_country=3&sel_type=25#

Failing that, I'm thinking about bodging something up with a strip of old tape-measure and a padlock!

Here's my solution.  It won't suit everyone, but is fine for leaving the computer unattended in a hotel room while it crunches a big file or spiders a website. Which is all I need the lock for.

Slot the thin metal strip through the gap between the hinge and the base unit (i.e. it doesn't go anywhere near the screen), then padlock the strip to itself to make a closed loop (pictured).

Then thread a regular chain through the loop and around your secure object and padlock that.

Cost - 30 cents for the metal strip. Consider it patented!
