Power on Issues, Lenovo Yoga 13 Ideapad: Annoying Black Screen of Death (March 17, 2017)

Just a heads-up: I bought this Lenovo Yoga 13 Ideapad in 2013, so it's out of warranty. Proceed to read my problem.....

I always get a black screen whenever I shut off my laptop and turn it back on again, which is why I lock my laptop instead. But when I DO lock it and get back on it the next morning, I encounter the Black screen of death and instead of my lockscreen immediately appearing like normal after I lock it and have left it overnight & try to get on it, I have to shut down my laptop and turn it back on because my laptop won't immedately take me to the lock screen so I can log into my computer.

Today (March 17, 2017), I had to shut down and turn on my laptop while pressing the rotation button button or the OneKey Recovery button (the button with a circle and a line going through it; I don't know exactly what it's called, but I think it's the recovery button OR the screen rotation button, on the right hand side of the computer: If anyone knows the name of this button, please let me know!)..I tried this 5 times and It wouldn't turn on. The 6th time pressing the Recovery button OR the screen rotation button on the right side of the laptop (whatever it's called), it did work and now I'm on my laptop typing like normal.

But this Lenovo Yoga Ideapad 13 only works when it wants to. Is there any proven fix to this hardware issue? I was told that it was a motherboad issue, but what's the real culprit? And is the motherboard what's actually giving me the problem, or is it something else? I also get this same black screen issue after I have shut down my laptop and try to turn it back on again as well as when I lock it and leave it overnight.

How can I permenantly fix this hardware issue so my laptop can work like normal? Please email me at amirabellah@gmail.com for a permenant solution to get my Yoga 13 working like normal.

See the photo I attached. It's a bit small, so you'll have to look real close, but it's a picture of the button I'm talking about that has the symbol of a circle with the line through it...what's this button called: the screen lock rotation button OR the One Key Recovery button? Again, I tried pressing this button 5 times after powering on my laptop 5 times and it only worked on the SIXTH time....Right now, that's the only way I know how to turn my laptop on with the screen actually powering on, showing the Lenovo logo, and then taking me to my lock screen. Please tell me the name of this button so I can know what it is and then proceed to help me fix this black screen issue whenever I try to power on my laptop after shutting it down OR after I lock it and leave it overnight!

I really need your help guys! Thanks in advance! <3

Hello Complex1

Thanks for using the Lenovo forums.

Going by the hardware manual(page 58) for this unit, that would be the screen lock button that you have enquired about.

Try a static discharge for this, it may help to resolve the issue or at least get rid of any built up static on the motherboard.

(If the battery is internal, please just skip the remove/replace battery steps.)
1. Turn the unit off
2. Remove the battery and the Mains adapter
3. Press and hold the front power button for 30 seconds
4. Replace the battery and the Mains adapter
5. Turn the unit on as normal

Hope this helps, let us know how you get on.

Re: Power on Issues, Lenovo Yoga 13 Ideapad: Annoying Black Screen of Death (March 17, 2017)

I'm using the laptop now. It only works and turns on when it wants to, sadly, and I've tried those steps when my laptop is turned off, but nothing works. It still won't turn on when it's turned off. Got any other ideas? Smiley Sad

Like I said, it only turns on when it wants to....if it's a motherboard issue, is it fixable if I take it into a tech  shop for them to take a look? Smiley Sad

There could a chances of motherboard failure. If it is under warranty I would recommend contacting Lenovo service centres and applying the normal phone techniques to get it replaced promptly.

It's out of warranty. I bought my Yoga 13 in 2013. I'll see if someone in a computer shop can fix it once I have the cash.
