Re: Yoga 2 pro sound problem

2014-05-26, 7:29 AM

When my speakers stop working I simply lift the laptop and tap the underside of the laptop's upper right hand corner by the headphone jack and the sound comes back.  Clearly it's a hardware problem at least for me.  I need my laptop now so won't be returning to Lenovo quite yet.  Waiting til I get close to the end of warranty so they can fix all the problems I am having with this piece of garbage.  This is just another annoying problem from a poor quality product from Lenovo.  But with this gorgeous screen, it's hard to give up until there is something better out there.

TCJ: It's funny that you can tap the outside of the laptop (upper right corner, underside).  I've been experiencing something similar - but on the opposite side of the laptop.  I've been hesitant to mention it, because I don't understand why.

Sometimes, while watching a movie and listening through the speakers, and the sound will go off.  I will sit up to try to fix the problem, but upon opening the screen wider, the sound comes back.  I can't tell if it is my pinching the upper left corner of the base, or the lower left corner of the screen, or if it is the rotation of the screen which brings it back.

Re: Yoga 2 pro sound problem

Clarybear,

I'm reading through this thread and also this related one now and this presents like two different problems.

One being an apparant problem reading the headphone jack - whether this is a mechanical issue truly or not I don't know.  Certainly changing the results through use of a contact cleaner, or multiple plug / unplug  cycles or tapping on the port or case sounds like a mechanical problem with the port.

Another branch of this sounds like it is a problem with th Realtek drivers - perhaps conflicting with some version of other drivers in Windows, or power management states (coming back from sleep).

I've asked several of our engineers who are using Yoga 2 Pros, and they've not run into this.  From the number we have sold, if this was a high volume problem, I'd expect these threads to be bigger by now, but it does seem like something worth looking into.   Hopefully we can find a system that will exhibit the problem internally, but as you note, this is intermittant.

If someone in the US has this problem and it was not fixed through updating or uninstalling the realtek audio drivers, it might help to look at your system, especially if this is a pretty consistent problem.

I'd also like to ask those on this thread if they are running Windows 8 or now 8.1 and whether this problem started on 8 or only after 8.1?   I'm not looking to put this off on the upgrade, especially for those cases that seem like it is the port rather than the driver, but I'm curious.  There was a nother thread where realtek audio stopped working after the 8.1 update and you had to reinstall it as the fix.   Just another data point...

Lastly, we are working on the screen flicker symptoms - I believe there is a BIOS update targeted to fix that - still in testing right now, but hopefully available "soon".

Best regards,

Mark

The screen flicker fix is awesome news!

Since these computers shipped with Windows 8.1, I think it is safe to assume this problem is widespread on 8.1 with little/no testing on windows 8.

Indest,

Regarding Windows 8.1 ...

Yes, good point.  I was just thinking out loud... a dangerous thing for a forum admin to do.

Perhaps I was conflating Yoga 13 which did come out under 8 with the Yoga 2 pro.

Thanks

Mark

Lol.... I know only of the Yoga 2 because I own it. No-one can expect you (admin or not) to know about every computer referenced on these forums. Even if you do, it is easy to confuse laptops with similar hardware.

The fact that you are keeping an open dialog and looking to improve the Yoga 2 Pro is something many of us appreciate.

My last comment was just a reminder to assist in your troubleshooting.

I have the same issue where the audio only works when headphone jacks are inserted.  I've tried the plug and unplug solution with no success.  The problem is persistent and the issue is not solved by uninstalling and reinstalling audio drivers.  Upon doing so I noticed that my driver was 6.0.1.7040 before uninstalling.  I downloaded the driver from the lenovo support page for the Yoga 2 Pro, and now am running 6.0.1.7010.  After restarting the computer after installing new drivers, I noticed a dubious audio jack notification via the Realtek HD Audio Manager Icon that I had apparently just plugged a device into the audio jack.  So my suspicion is that this is indeed hardware.

Oh, and tapping near the jack also has not worked.

Thank you.  I appreciate that someone from Lenovo has finally acknowledged the problem.  That is the first step to fixing it.

If this isn't a high-volume problem (the sound problem), could there be a single manufacturing lot that has these problems?  If so, wouldn't it make sense for us to receive replacement laptops unless/until the problem is fixed?  It's rather harmful for the lenovo reputation for these items to be out in circulation.  Anytime one of my colleagues witnesses this problem - be it the sound not working on a presentation, or the realtek notices popping up in the corner of the screen, I am forced to explain the fact that lenovo sold what appears to be a defective product.

My problem is not very "intermittant," it happens several times a day.  Perhaps a representative can examine my laptop.  I'm sure the problem would happen while they are using it.
