Re: Should I buy the Y2P?

2013-12-14, 14:52 PM
Yeah, it's a bit too large and too heavy to be used in tablet mode and just held in your hands, but if it was any smaller it would be pretty much unusable as a laptop. I do use stand mode a lot though. I haven't had any problems with the keyboard on the back, if the table is clean then I use tent/laptop mode, if it isn't then I use it in tablet mode on my lap+edge of the table. Tbh if it's dirty I'm not going to put the laptop on it even in laptop mode.

And that's the problem :) I would want it to be both a great laptop and a great tablet! I do think that SP2 is a better laptop than Y2P is a tablet though, if you catch my meaning. It all depends on what your primary use is. For me I just can't give up that screen and the performance for the price, but it does mean that I'll be getting a Kindle HDX 8.9, which I didn't need with SP2. There goes the price/performace :)

If you're ok with 11 inch screen in a laptop then it'll definitely be better as a tablet. For me it would be unusable, but it's all about the screen size you need.

You should check the Dell XPS 11, it'll probably fit your needs better.

Re: Should I buy the Y2P?

2013-12-14, 21:23 PM
The buying choice ultimately depends on your individual needs but here's my experience after one month of ownership, using it daily, primarily for my job (teaching). Any comparisons are from my last machine - a 2012 MacBook Air.

Wifi has been trouble-free. I say that having used a good range of known and less-known brand routers here, some of which are 4-5 years old. Also, as Ethernet still prevails in China, I've been fine with various adapters running in AP Mode converting an Ethernet connection to wifi.

Bluetooth was a bugbear at first. I kept my Apple Magic Mouse and wireless keyboard but they would often drop the BT connection. Disabling power management in device manager fixed this. Not a single drop since. Not entirely sure if this is a Y2P or Win 8.1 issue.

Color: the BIOS and energy manager update fixed this.

Trackpad: I dislike trackpads in general and try to use a mouse and keyboard wherever possible. That said, I don't find the Y2P's any better or worse than the MBA.

Screen: after testing various resolutions and battery life impacts, I run at 3200. First, although I can gain an extra 1.5-2 hours charge at 1920, I'm on power most of the day so I don't need to consider it as much as others might. Second, Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Outlook 2013 (plus Firefox) are where I spend 99% of my time. These run beautifully at 3200. Side-by-side editing/creating is great at this resolution, as is the OS in general in terms of looks and sharpness. All that said, I could easily run 1920 instead for battery gains.

The second point about 3200 is tablet mode. I use this a lot in the evenings to primarily read the news. The screen is closer to my eyes than in desktop mode but the high PPI means it's on par, for me, with reading from my Retina iPad Mini. I've been wanting a big iPad with high PPI for a while for content consumption and the Y2P gets the job done. Yes, it's not as light as a genuine tablet at that size, but it's perfect for the few hours I need one. If I had a 13-inch iPad, it'd go unused for the rest of the day. Plus, I don't need to spend on/charge/carry a separate device.

I have also used tablet and tent mode in class when there's been a power cut and the e-board or projector is out of action. It's also handy having the option to go to tablet mode and show flashcards or images closer to students whilst roaming the classroom. Whilst I could have made do on a traditional laptop, it would not have been so easy or effective.

FWIW my battery tests yielded around 7 to 7.5 hours at 3200 in Office and Firefox at 70% brightness on Ethernet. The same at 1920 was 8 to 8.5 hours. By comparison, my 2012 MacBook Air running Win 7 would last 4 hours. I guess the 2013 Haswells are better. And sure, OSX rather than Windows lasted me 7 hours, but Office on the Mac is incomparable to the Windows counterpart. So, given the time I spend using it, that's a moot point for me.

In summary, the Y2P near-perfect for my needs - a desktop for content creation during the day and a consumption device in the evenings, plus options in-between, all in the same device.

Good luck with your buying choice. No doubt you have different requirements. But, As others have commented, not all Y2Ps are bad.

Beatifully written, awesome review.

I have a question though, pretty much unrelated. You said you wiped yours with a clean 8.1, did you have to install any particular programs for the yoga to work properly? Other than the drivers that is.

I downloaded all the latest drivers from to be sure they were the latest (despite them being on the D partition) but that was all. I did lose some of the Lenovo software but didn't intend on using it anyway. Had the Chinese 8.1 allowed MUI packs I would have kept it but needed both English and Chinese interfaces so went with International 8.1.

EDIT: forgot to mention I just formatted C, no messing with the partitions.
