Strange ticking sound when in sleep mode, Yoga c940

2019-12-01, 15:11 PM

Hi everyone,

I have just bought c940 device with 1tb, 16RAM, and FullHD screen.

The notebook itself is great and everything is working as it should.

However, I have noticed that when I close the lid and Yoga goes into the sleep mode (power button is flashing white), there are strange clicking sounds when you take the device with its bottom plate (where the fans are located) closely to your ear and listen carefully.

It's basically similar to your clock ticking, but it goes a little faster and that sound is really quite. You won't be able to hear it unless your Yoga is in front of your ear.

Could someone please try the same steps as I described (and listen to those sounds) to see if it's a common behavior or it's just mine device?

I would appreciate that!

Hi ,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

Do you hear the ticking sound, whether the charger is connected or not?

Boot to BIOS and close the lid. Let us know if the issue occurs in BIOS.

Here are some recommended ways to access BIOS: https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/solutions/ht500216

Update us how it goes.

Hi there!

Thanks for your reply. The sounds can be heard when the laptop is disconnected from the charger.

However, I don't even know if that's an issue. These sounds are extremely quiet and it's impossible to hear them unless your ear is around 5cm close to the backplate where the fans are located.

Can someone try to hear if the same sounds are in your c940 device?

Same config as yours. And yes, can hear it too in standby.

What worries me more is that in normal working state, fans off, there is electric buzz, like sparking sound at the ports corner/middle. Which at times gets louder, so I can hear it from normal working distance, that's what made me to investigate the issue.

The elevated sparking noise is audible both at the power adapter and at the battery. Surge protector or wall socket does not matter.

I also tried Lenovo docking station - same occasional noise. Sometimes it becomes louder, so I can hear the laptop going to standby from a feet and a half (farther corner of my desk). That is definitely not a fan.

Default power profile (Intelligent).

Can you hear any static/buzzing/sparking electric noise from a working distance too?

My other Lenovo is ThinkPad T470s with i5. That one has a constant electric hum at standby, but no ticking. It also makes electric CPU-related noises. But I can hear that only when I put my ear to it. The Yoga is noisier and can be heard in normal working position in a quiet room, AC is not running, or even 1.5 ft away as it is sitting docked there.

Input is welcome

Hi everyone,

I was suffering from the coil whine and wanted to check what exactly causes the noise. It turned out that only one of the fans is whining and the other one is relatively quiet. But I also heard that mentioned buzzing sound, which was pretty loud for my standards, so I started to worry.

The buzzing is definitely louder when charging. It comes from somewhere nearby the Thunderbolt ports. It's not annoying in my case and barely hearable, it can be heard from a distance of about 30cm. What worries me more is that whining which is hard to stand, but that's a different (well-known) topic.

I don't hear any ticking, but i do hear very subtle static electrical noise from the laptop near the ports exactly the same that others have mentioned in this thread. My previous device had this and my new device also seem to have this as well. Both the same model.

Is this something to be worried about?

I'm just concerned that the laptop might fail or become a fire hazard.

Same configuration, similiar electric noise - maybe also describable as similar to anoise of an old HDD - in idle mode it's worst.

Do anyone have this issue with the i5-CPU?

Did anyone ordered a replacement device?

I mentioned it when sending my I7 C940 to Lenovo's service (because of a high-pitched fan sound). If they haven't done anything with that then I guess there's nothing to worry about. I will find out tomorrow and let you know.

Can confirm, can also hear sound during sleep mode. I'm starting to think Lenovo designed something wrong in the c940 cuz being able to hear that + also hearing relatively audible static noise when charging is just odd considering this pc takes a lot of time to charge while lid open as well. Puts you to think if they got the voltage settings wrong or something after manufacturing.
