Hi Stohenry! Welcome to our forums community. Is it still overheating when it is on idle? Could you try updating the BIOS firmware here: https://support.lenovo.com/ provide the model or serial number and go to Drivers and Software tab. Look for BIOS/EUFI and install it. Restart the computer and check if the issue persist. Update us with the result.

Thanks for getting back to us.
Could you send us any error messages that you're getting whenever you're trying to download the BIOS firmware so we can take a closer look of the possible cause of the error? Also, can you confirm if the overheating is present when the laptop is in Idle mode?

Thank you. Download the Lenovo Vantage Tool and let it install the latest BIOS, might as well install the latest drivers,
Also, extensive usage might cause the laptop to heat up. It's considered not normal when it heats up even if it's not in use. You may want to check the ventilation. Make sure that it's not blocked when using it.
Let us know how it goes.
